Job summary

ECU Health Chowan Hospital in Edenton, NC seeks a Certified Nursing Assistant II to provide direct patient care under licensed nurse supervision, including potential EKGs, venipuncture, admission, transport and discharge with proper training.

The role supports unit goals, participates in quality improvement, and maintains readiness through annual education and de-escalation training. Part-time, PRN shifts in the Emergency Department are available.

Qualifications

  • Active NAI listing with NC Department of Health & Human Services is required.
  • Active NAII listing with North Carolina Board of Nursing is required.
  • Current American Heart Association HeartSaver or higher certification is required.
  • De-escalation training (Non-violent crisis intervention or other de-escalation program) required or must be completed within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in quality improvement activities and problem solving to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Participates in data collection and adheres to infection control, safety, and fire/disaster regulations.
  • Attends staff development programs and participates in orientation of new staff or students as delegated by supervising RN.
  • Provides direct patient care under supervision of a licensed nurse and completes delegated skills aligned with NC DHHS and NC Board of Nursing.
  • Maintains effective communication with the care team and documentation per unit workflows.
  • Supports unit/department goals and participates in cost-effective use of equipment and supplies.
  • May perform other duties such as EKGs, phlebotomy, venipuncture, admission, transport, and discharge under appropriate training.

Position Summary

The Certified Nursing Assistant II performs specific responsibilities under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. Functions within the framework of the NAII listing granted by the NC Board of Nursing. Practices within the philosophy and goals of patient care services. In addition, the Nursing Assistant may be utilized in the Observer Role responsible for monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period.

Responsibilities

Participates in quality Improvement (QI) Activities: Participates in problem solving resolution activities and identifies opportunities for improvement to change behavior. Participates in data collection. Employs safe practices, infection control, and fire and disaster regulations. Participates in cost savings activities.

Participates in Education: Attends and utilizes staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit objectives and/or individual objectives. Fulfills annual mandatory educational requirements. Participates in the orientation of new staff and students, as delegated by the supervising RN.

Follows hospital and unit based policies and procedures: Provides quality patient care. Maintains familiarity with job description and legal implications of role. Maintain active NAI and NAII licensure/certification.

Builds interpersonal relations and communications. Listens to the ideas, opinions, and feelings of others. Gives and receives constructive feedback. Recognizes and intervenes when personal conflicts have the potential to interfere with patient care or team relationships. Works effectively with others in a team environment. Demonstrates behaviors and attitudes that are respectful or others, and fosters enhanced communication and teamwork. Seeks help and utilizes chain of command appropriately.

Makes unit, department and hospital contributions: Participates in unit goal setting. Assists in cost-effective use of equipment and supplies.

Under the supervision of the licensed nurse, assists in providing direct patient care and completes delegated skills and tasks ascribed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and North Carolina Board of Nursing.

With appropriate education and training, may perform other duties as assigned (such as: EKGs, Phlebotomy, venipuncture, assisting in admission, transport, and discharge of patient).

Monitors the patient for signs of escalating behaviors. Alerts nurse if the patient exhibits risk of harming himself/herself or others. Maintains level of observation according to the patient's plan of care and as ordered within medical record. Communicate effectively with the patient's care team including receiving report and providing meaningful handoff. Documents accurately on established workflows within the medical record. Provides hazard surveillance and reduces risk within the patient's physical environment. Engages patient appropriately in distraction activities as needed.

Minimum Requirements
  • High School or GED is preferred - or higher
  • Active NAI listing with NC Department of Health & Human Services is required.
  • Active NAII listing with North Carolina Board of Nursing is required.
  • Current American Heart Association HeartSaver or higher certification is required.
  • De-escalation training (Non-violent crisis intervention or other de-escalation program adopted by ECU Health). If not current at the time of hire must complete within 90 days of employment and maintain without lapse during employment. This is not required for Ambulatory clinical positions.

ECU Health Chowan Hospital in Edenton is a 25-bed critical access hospital which provides programs and services to 110,000 people in 6 counties. The facility offers medical and surgical services, including intensive care, a specialty care clinic and a dedicated outpatient surgery area with endoscopy capabilities. A 7-bed emergency department serves approximately 15,000 patients per year and team members at the facility have access to a telemedicine link with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
