Job summary

Beacon Health System seeks compassionate patient care assistant to support daily living activities under RN delegation. You will document vital signs, assist with mobility, and help ensure a safe, respectful patient environment according to unit policies.

Responsibilities include accurate shift reporting, maintaining clean patient rooms, and responding to call lights promptly, while upholding Beacon values of trust, respect, integrity and compassion as part of relationship-based care.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; minimum age 17.
  • Nurse Assistant certification preferred; CPR/BCLS within 3 months of hire.
  • Experience with basic hospital equipment and monitoring vital signs is anticipated.
  • Strong teamwork and clear communication are essential.
  • Basic computer knowledge is beneficial for documenting care and orders.
  • Awareness of patient privacy regulations and confidentiality expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and document vital signs and intake/output; report abnormal findings promptly.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, mobility, and positioning.
  • Deliver prescribed blood products per policy and collect specimens as needed.
  • Provide hourly rounding and respond to call lights to ensure patient comfort.
  • Maintain clean, organized patient rooms and department areas.
  • Communicate shift reports clearly to supervising nurse and team.
  • Assist in emergency situations as directed and support a collaborative health-team culture.

Job description

Reports to Patient Care Services Manager. Assist patients with performing activities of daily living when delegated by RN. Keeps the nurse up to date on any changes in patient information. Exhibits exceptional patient experience by upholding Beacon values of respect, trust integrity and compassion. Functions within the relationship-based care nursing model.

Supply Inventory/Unit Maintenance
  • Monitors stock supplies and materials, and reports shortages.

  • Performs QA checks as directed.
Patient Care Delivery
  • Clinical Care - Obtains and documents height, weight, intake and output, vital signs, blood glucose, and reports any abnormal findings in a timely manner. Picks up and delivers blood products per policy. Appropriately collects and delivers specimens. Completes purposeful hourly rounding. Assists with answering call lights. Delivers 1:1 staffing care when requested.
  • Activity of Daily Living - Attends to hygiene and grooming needs of patients. Provides safe patient environment. Provides patient mobility, ambulation, positioning, and transportation. Assures the patient receives the correct diet and assists with feeding as needed.
  • Thoroughly documents all patient care provided.
Resource Driven Practice
  • Seek education and supervision as necessary.
  • Participates in councils, committees, and process improvement activities.
  • Has regular and prompt attendance.
Contribute To The Overall Effectiveness Of The Department
  • Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
  • Receives patient feedback via call backs, leader rounds, or surveys.
Organizational Responsibilities

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.
Education And Experience
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Must be a minimum of 17 years of age. Previous patient care experience preferred. A Nurse Assistant certification is preferred. Must obtain Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/CPR) within 3 months of hire and maintain certification.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Familiarity with basic hospital equipment and policies and procedures.
  • Able to perform blood pressure and other vital signs correctly.
  • Knowledge of and correct utilization of good body mechanics.
  • Requires an understanding of the need to be responsive and reasonably adaptable for scheduling purposes, when necessary, due to extenuating circumstances in support of co-workers and department functions.

  • Communicates clearly and promptly with supervising nurse in order to give prompt care and experience for patients and families.
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills.
  • Complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct.
  • Complies with federal and hospital regulations regarding protected health information and patient privacy.
  • Attendance at one annual in service each year to review hospital policies and procedures is mandatory or view staff orientation presentation on the intranet and turn in quiz to Human Resources.
Working Conditions
  • Moderate stress involved when census and/or acuity is high, or staff is low. Potential hazards due to possible direct exposure to patients with infectious diseases, exposure to sometimes hostile and combative patients.
Physical Demands
  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
