Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health's 6 West unit is a 28-bed blended acuity unit focused on neurology, including acute stroke, brain injury, and seizures. As a certified stroke center, we collaborate with vascular neurology to deliver high-quality care.

This role supports nursing staff by caring for patients, monitoring vital signs, assisting with daily living activities, and aiding with nutrition and safety. Training is provided, and the hospital emphasizes patient-centered service.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) required or to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
• Skills: Basic reading, writing and math; basic medical terminology and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge: Basic computer skills essential.

Responsibilities

• Cares for patients as delegated by the RN and assists with activities of daily living.
• Takes and records vital signs as directed.
• Reports unusual observations to the nurse in charge.
• Assists with intake/output and nutrition needs.
• Performs basic clinical procedures under supervision.
• Supports infection control and safety policies and orientation of new staff.

6 West is a 28-bed blended acuity unit with a clinical specialty in neurology. This population of patients includes acute stroke, traumatic brain injury, seizures, epilepsy monitoring and other acute neurological diseases. As a certified comprehensive stroke center, we work closely with the vascular neurology team, and our nurses are experts in acute stroke care. In addition, this unit sees a wide variety of acutely ill medical patients. Our team is committed to the delivery of safe, high quality care to our patients.

Job Description

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

• Cares for patients as delegated by the registered nurse and completes all aspects of activities of daily living for assigned patients (refer to Delegation Competency for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel).
• Vital Signs: May take and record the following: vital signs, height and weight, oxygen saturation.
• Reports all unusual observations or reactions of the patient to the nurse assigned to the patient or charge nurse.
• Intake and Output: Collects various specimens for analysis and measures and records intake and output.
• Activities of Daily Living: Provides patients with personal care and assist with activities of daily living.
• Clinical Procedures: Performs basic clinical procedures independently or under direct supervision of a nurse.
• Nutrition: Provides for patient’s nutritional needs including assisting the patient with ordering room service, set up of meal tray, and feeds the patient as required.
• Safety: Supports a culture of safety and carries out safety interventions for all patients.
• Infection Control: Adheres to all applicable infection control policies and procedures.
• Sitter: Assist as patient safety attendant after completion of required competency.
• Orientation: Assists with orientation of new Nursing Assistant colleagues.
• Performs additional unit-based activities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Basic Life Support/BLS Required. New Hires/transfers will have 30 days to obtain BLS certification.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Basic ability to read, write and perform basic four-function math.

Ability to obtain knowledge of medical terminology, basic personal computer skills, and interpersonal skills.

Pay Range

$20.00 - $26.92

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
