Job summary

DC Health, within the Department of Health, seeks a Nursing Assistant to support the School Health Services Program. You will assist in delivering school-based healthcare, follow clinical supervision, document interventions in the EHR, and help maintain immunization and health data for students and staff.

You will work under RN supervision, perform routine measurements, assist with medications, and contribute to health promotion and emergency readiness in a school setting.

Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience in a school health setting or pediatric care.
  • Strong knowledge of health screening, vital signs, and emergency response.
  • Ability to provide direct and delegated health services under supervision.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA/FERPA confidentiality guidelines.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of Health (DOH). DOH promotes health, wellness, and equity across the district, and protects the safety of residents, visitors, and those doing business in the nation’s capital. The School Health Services Program (SHSP) is responsible for delivering comprehensive school-based healthcare to students across the District of Columbia. Services are provided in health suites located within schools and are designed to ensure timely access to primary care, preventative screenings, chronic disease management, and health education. The incumbent serves as a Nursing Assistant, supporting the daily operations of the school health suite. Under the clinical supervision of a Supervisory Nurse Coordinator and the task direction of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), the Nursing Assistant assists in the provision of direct and delegated health services to students and staff and contributes to the overall health and well-being of the school community.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Provides first aid and emergency care to students and staff in alignment with school health policies and clinical protocols. Administers prescription and over-the-counter medications in accordance with physician orders and nursing delegation standards. Assists with clinical tasks including measuring and recording vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate), and promptly reporting abnormalities to supervising nurses. Conducts health screenings (vision, hearing, height, weight) in accordance with District health guidelines and schedules. Supports students with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and allergies, under the direction of licensed nurses; performs assigned treatments and procedures as delegated. Maintains complete and timely documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system for all care provided, including medical interventions, screenings, and student health encounters. Monitors and updates student health data, immunization compliance, and ensures maintenance of required documentation. Serves as the initial point of contact for students visiting the health suite and delivers culturally competent, compassionate care.

Communicates health-related information to families, providers, and school staff under the supervision of the RN, while adhering to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act confidentiality guidelines. Provides general health education and contributes to the coordination of individualized care plans. Adheres to infection prevention protocols and standard safety practices; maintains readiness to respond to medical emergencies and initiates Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as needed. Monitors inventory and requests replenishment of medical and emergency supplies to ensure the smooth functioning of the health suite. Participates in ongoing professional development related to emergency preparedness, health promotion, and school health best practices. Provides administrative support, including health data reporting, preparation for audits or campaigns, and coordination during public health initiatives. Collaborate with school personnel and external partners to address student health needs and promote wellness in the school community.

Qualifications and Education

Specialized Experience: is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least one year (1) ofthe next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

One or more years of experience in a school health setting, pediatric practice, public health clinic, or pediatric hospital is strongly preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements

Must possess CPR/AED certification and complete continuing education requirements as mandated by DOH or federal grants.

Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted Nursing Assistant license or certification in the District of Columbia.

Working Conditions and Environment

The work is performed in a school health suite within a public or charter school setting. There is potential exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and other medical hazards. The environment can be fast-paced, busy, and unpredictable, requiring strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols, as well as the ability to respond effectively to unexpected medical events.
