Position Summary
The Nurse Supervisor for Pediatrics Ambulatory Care provides both clinical and operational leadership for a dynamic, multispecialty pediatric outpatient practice within the Department of Pediatrics at WashU Medicine. Based primarily at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, this working supervisor role oversees approximately 20-25 nurses and support staff while supporting high-quality patient care across multiple ambulatory locations, including coverage needs at CSCC West, Graham Road, and Shiloh, Illinois.
Team Leadership & Development
- Drive hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and ongoing competency development for nursing and support staff.
Operational Excellence
- A typical day may include rounding with team members, operational planning, responding to staffing needs, addressing patient care concerns, and providing direct clinical support when necessary.
Hands‑On Support
- Round daily with staff, address patient care needs, step in with direct clinical support when needed, and resolve real-time operational challenges.
Collaboration
- Partner with providers, clinical teams, and leadership to maintain high standards of care across all locations.
Schedule
Monday‑Friday primarily standard clinic hours (7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.), with flexibility to adapt to operational and staffing needs.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Supervises nursing staff, including hiring/firing responsibilities, performance appraisals for subordinates, initiating disciplinary action.
- Coordinates patient services with physicians and staff to provide quality care in effective manner, conducting rounds to ensure quality of patient care delivery.
- Facilitates educational opportunities and quality improvement activities for staff to ensure compliance with medical school and regulatory guidelines.
- Assigns/coordinates activities and duties of staff orienting new staff and advising administration of conditions and performance issues.
- Provides direct patient care as needed, including development of patient care plans, administering medication, vitals, phlebotomy, monitoring IV therapies and maintaining records in accordance with approved nursing techniques.
- Promotes/maintains good public relations with patients and families, acting as liaison between other departments.
- Provides appropriate counsel to patients/families explaining medications, procedures and teaches care to ensure continuity of care and promote health care maintenance.
- Monitors supplies/equipment ordering/repairing as required.

Required Qualifications
- Education: Associate Degree/Diploma In Registered Nursing Or Diploma In Practical Nursing

- Driver’s License: A driver's license is not required for this position.
- Required Qualifications (repeat): Graduate of an accredited nursing program, plus a minimum of 2 years of related nursing experience. Current LPN or RN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location, in accordance with the Compact Act. Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior supervisory or team leadership experience in a clinical setting.
- Experience navigating high‑volume pediatric or ambulatory clinic operations.
- Familiarity with Epic EHR, project management tools (e.g., Monday.com), and communication platforms (MS Outlook, Teams, Zoom).

Grade S28 Salary Range
Salary Range $74,200.00 - $133,500.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
