Job summary

South Dakota Department of Corrections is seeking a Nurse Supervisor (NM1) for the Jameson Prison Annex in Sioux Falls. This full-time night shift (3:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m.) offers strong benefits and a competitive hourly wage of $40.00 to $50.00 depending on experience.

The role requires an active RN license, 3 years of nursing experience, and the ability to supervise staff and manage clinical operations in a corrections setting. SDRS retirement benefits are included.

Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of full‑time patient care experience as a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and ensures compliance with SD DOC policies, nursing standards, and documentation.

  • Assists HSA and CCES in maintaining clinical skills and staffing.

This is a Night Shift position, from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

The Nurse Supervisor (NM1) within the South Dakota Department of Corrections (SD DOC) is accountable for implementing nursing policies and procedures that align with best practices and meet regulatory requirements. They work closely with the Health Services Administrator (HSA) to promote high standards of care and support the professional development of nursing staff to provide quality care to patients in various clinical settings.

What you will do:
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Reviews and ensures compliance of SD DOC policies, clinical standards, nursing protocols, and clinical documentation.
  • Monitor and facilitate progressive patient care through team approach.
  • Delivers patient education to include demonstrating and explaining self-care techniques, anticipating possible complications of treatments, informing about desired and undesirable side effects of medication and treatments, and listening to offender concerns.
  • Assists Health Services Administrator (HSA) and Clinical Compliance & Education Specialist (CCES) in maintaining clinical skills of licensed nursing staff and unlicensed assistive personnel while ensuring tasks performed are within scope of licensure.
  • Identifies and addresses potential problems, establishes priorities and proposes corrective actions.
  • Promotes and is accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item/contraband control including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control.
  • Responsible for payroll, scheduling, and Continuous Performance Communication (CPC) check-ins and appraisals; accountable for completion of shift responsibilities for 8-12 hours per day; point person for daily clinic operations and decisions; assigns nursing staff, coordinates staff orientation, and rearranges and reorganizes clinic routines as needed, assists in hiring, participates in promotional examinations and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Recommends, implements, and monitors compliance with policies and procedures; functions as an on-call supervisor and as such arranges for coverage when appropriate and approves overtime.
  • Maintains unit cleanliness while ensuring appropriate stock levels of medical supplies and equipment maintenance.
  • Coordinates patient care with other departments/agencies/vendors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Applicant must possess a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

  • Applicant must have three (3) years of full-time experience providing patient care as a Registered Nurse.

Substitutions:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing may substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • A master's degree or doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in nursing may substitute for two years of the required experience.
  • ability to effectively supervise staff;
  • ability to effectively treat offender patients;
  • maintain required licensure/credentials;
  • excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
  • ability to read and comprehend the English language;
  • ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing;
  • ability to problem solve and think critically to effectively resolve issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year or more of nursing supervisory experience;
  • Nursing experience as a Registered Nurse in a correctional environment;

Conditions of Employment:
The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines – this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:

  • lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
  • stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
  • use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
  • withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
  • rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
  • get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.

Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
