Responsibilities

• Support students during the school day, transportation, field trips, and community activities.

Substitute Nurse

Provide direct nursing care to an individual student or small group of students ages 3–22 with disabilities and complex medical needs. Assignments are matched to the nurse’s training, competency, and the specific needs of the student(s).

Qualifications

• Current Illinois RN license
• Current CPR certification
• Pediatric, special needs, or school nursing experience preferred
• Experience working with children or adolescents with disabilities preferred
• Strong clinical judgment, communication, organization, and teamwork skills
• Ability to respond effectively to medical emergencies

Priority Nursing Skills

Depending on the student assignment, skills may include:

• Medication administration
• Seizure recognition and management
• Diabetes management
• EpiPen administration
• Catheterization
• Feeding tube care: pump and/or gravity
• Tracheostomy care and suctioning
• Ventilator care and monitoring
• Care of medically fragile students

Substitute Nurses will only be assigned to students whose medical needs align with their demonstrated training and competency.

Key Responsibilities
