Singing River Health System is seeking a Nurse Stroke Coordinator to lead the stroke program across the continuum of care. This nurse will work with the Stroke Program Medical Director, coordinate with neuroscience teams, and serve as a clinical liaison to physicians, staff, patients and families.

The role emphasizes ensuring high-quality, patient-focused stroke care, coordinating across departments and driving process improvements to improve outcomes for stroke patients.

Qualifications

  • RN license in Mississippi required.
  • ASDN is required; BSN/MSN preferred.
  • 3–5+ years of nursing experience, neuroscience/critical care; 2+ years leadership in a stroke program.
  • Stroke Coordinator Certification or eligibility; de-escalation training within 90 days of orientation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the stroke program from an interdisciplinary perspective.
  • Collaborate with Stroke Program Medical Director, Neuroscience Program Coordinator, and communicate with physicians, nurses, therapists and families.
  • Provide leadership for organization of services and systems for high-quality, patient-focused stroke care.

Position Overview

The Nurse Stroke Coordinator is an expert nurse fundamental to the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the stroke program directed towards the provision of quality services for patients who are experiencing stroke from an interdisciplinary perspective throughout the continuum of care.

This individual works collaboratively with the Stroke Program Medical Director, Coordinator Neuroscience Programs, and acts as a clinical liaison and communicates to physicians, nurses, therapists, other ancillary staff, patients and their families.

The Nurse Stroke Coordinator provides leadership for the organization of services and systems necessary for a collaborative approach to stroke care.

The Nurse Stroke Coordinator will assume the day-to-day responsibilities of process and performance improvement as they relate to nursing and ancillary personnel with an end goal to achieve high quality, patient-focused outcomes in stroke care.

This position also serves as a resource for staff, patients, families and the community by providing clinical expertise and by teaching in formal and informal settings.

Education

Associate Degree in Nursing required. Bachelor of Science Degree (BSN) or Master of Science Degree (MSN) from an accredited school of nursing preferred.

License

Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Mississippi.

Certifications

RN is required to complete and maintain BCLS certification upon hire and/or transfer.

Stroke Coordinator Certification (American Heart Association Certified Professional – Stroke or The Association of Neurovascular Clinicians - Advanced Stroke Certification (ASC-BC))

RN has 12 months, from the date they begin working to acquire Stroke Coordinator Certification.

Must have de-escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days); must have appropriate level of de-escalation training.

Experience

3 to 5+ years of nursing experience, with an emphasis on neuroscience or critical care. At least two (2) years of relevant leadership experience within a DNV or Joint Commission Stroke Program. Experience must be within the past five (5) years.

Physical Demands

Work is moderately active: involves sitting with frequent requirements to move about the office, move about the facility, and to travel to another facility within the SRHS service area. Work involves exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Work involves using many physical motions in performing daily work activities; subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease. Work involves using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and or fingers while operating standard office equipment such as computer keyboard.

Work involves being able to perceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels with or without correction; the ability to make fine discriminations in sound. Work requires close visual and acuity and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e. shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms/printed material that are closer to compare data at close vision.

Must be able to be active for extended periods of time without experiencing undue fatigue. Must be able to work schedules assigned with the understanding that changes may be instituted according to the needs of the hospital for off days, shifts or weekends.

Mental Demands

Must demonstrate keen mental faculties/assessment and decision making abilities. Must demonstrate superior communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone. Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Must possess emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels. Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in complex situations is required. Must have the ability to maintain collaborative and respectable working relationships throughout SRHS and other organizations.

Special Demands

Must possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette. Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (must be keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.), MS Outlook and Word. Must be able to demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment and apply appropriate professional skills to a patient population of all ages.
