Job summary

Albany Medical Center in New York is seeking an experienced Advanced Practice Provider (PA/NP) to deliver high-quality surgical care within the Bariatric Program. The APP will assess, treat, and manage bariatric patients across inpatient, outpatient, and perioperative settings as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities include pre-, peri-, and post-operative patient care, ordering tests, prescribing treatments, and educating patients and families.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited PA/NP program and licensed in NY.
• National certification as PA/NP and BLS certification required.
• Strong clinical judgment, communication and organizational skills.
• Proficiency with electronic health records and clinical information systems.

Responsibilities

• Perform patient evaluations, develop treatment plans, and manage surgical patients across pre-operative, perioperative, and post-operative settings.
• Order and interpret diagnostic, laboratory, and imaging studies to support patient care.
• Prescribe medications and treatments in line with regulations and policies.
• Educate patients and families on diagnoses, procedures, medications, recovery expectations, and follow-up care.
• Document patient care accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
• Collaborate with surgeons, APPs, nursing staff, and ancillary teams to coordinate patient-centered care.
• Participate in rounds, case reviews, and care planning discussions.

Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant – Bariatric Program

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP), Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP), provides high-quality surgical care within the Department of Surgery in accordance with New York State regulations, Albany Medical Center policies, and departmental standards. The APP works as part of a multidisciplinary team to assess, treat, and manage surgical patients across inpatient, outpatient, and perioperative settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

• Perform patient evaluations, develop treatment plans, and manage surgical patients across pre-operative, perioperative, and post-operative settings.
• Order and interpret diagnostic, laboratory, and imaging studies to support patient care.
• Perform procedures, prescribe treatments, and monitor patient progress within the APP’s scope of practice, licensure, and delegated or collaborative authority.
• Prescribe medications and treatments in compliance with applicable regulations and institutional policies.
• Educate patients and families on diagnoses, procedures, medications, recovery expectations, and follow-up care.

Care Coordination and Collaboration

• Collaborate with surgeons, APPs, nursing staff, and ancillary teams to coordinate patient-centered care.
• Participate in rounds, case reviews, and care planning discussions.

Documentation and Compliance

• Document patient care accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
• Maintain compliance with regulatory, accreditation, patient safety, confidentiality, and professional practice standards.

Quality and Professional Responsibilities

• Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and departmental performance initiatives.
• Support goals related to access, efficiency, outcomes, patient experience, and clinical excellence.
• Maintain required licensure, certifications, competencies, and continuing education.

Division of Metabolic and Perioperative Support Services

The APP will also support the Division of Metabolic and Perioperative Support Services by assisting with surgical readiness, care coordination, patient education, and clinical follow-up.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
• Current New York State PA or NP license.
• Current national certification as a PA or NP, as applicable.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Strong clinical judgment, communication, organizational, and EHR skills.
• Proficiency with electronic health records and clinical information systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• DEA registration and New York State prescriptive authority, or eligibility to obtain, as applicable.
• Knowledge of surgical patient management and perioperative care.
• Experience in an academic medical center or tertiary care environment.

Required Experience

• One (1) year of clinical APP experience preferred.
• Surgical, perioperative, hospital-based, or ambulatory surgery experience strongly preferred.

Preferred Experience

• Experience in metabolic health, obesity medicine, perioperative optimization, or complex surgical support services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong clinical assessment and patient management skills.
