Job summary

The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) is hiring a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our PICU team. This is a full-time position with a rotating schedule.

Our Pediatric Critical Care Division includes the PICU and PCICU, a 19-bed unit providing multidisciplinary critical care for young patients with complex illnesses. New grads with PICU RN experience are welcome to apply.

Qualifications

  • Master of Science Degree with completion of an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  • CPR required.
  • ACLS/BCLS as required for inpatient work.
  • A minimum of one year experience as a Registered Nurse is required.
  • Ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, and/or certification in area of specialty.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact with patient families and healthcare teams.

Responsibilities

  • Provide pediatric acute care in the PICU, collaborating with physicians, nurses, and allied staff.
  • Participate in high-quality patient care, safety, and family-centered initiatives.
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical competencies and hospital-required training.

Job Description

We are hiring a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our PICU team!

This is a full-time position with a rotating scheduling.

Our Pediatric Critical Care Division includes the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU), a 19-bed facility that provides state-of-the-art multidisciplinary critical care for young patients with life-threatening medical, cardiac and surgical conditions. The unit is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by a team led by board-certified pediatric intensivists.

Our dedicated ICU team—including attending faculty, fellows, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, critical care nurses, critical care respiratory therapists, pharmacists, clinical nutritionists, social workers, case managers and child life specialists—are leaders in quality, safety, performance improvement and family-centered care. In addition, the University of Maryland Children's Hospital is continually recognized as a Best Children's Hospital for cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report.

Qualifications
  • Master of Science Degree with completion of an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland. Certified in area of specialty. (DEA and CDS eligible).
  • CPR required
  • ACLS/BCLS as required for inpatient work.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience as a Registered Nurse is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patient families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff on all essential matters. Demonstrated/documented effective interpersonal skills.
  • Maintains updated hospital safety and other mandatory training.
  • Updated immunizations as recommended per practice area.
Working Conditions
  • Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call and overtime may be required.
  • There is potential for regular exposure to patients possessing infectious diseases in the work environment; requires observance of "Universal Precautions" by wearing gloves, goggles, and mask, is required.
