Duke University Health System is hiring a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for nights. This role combines NP or PA responsibilities to deliver care for critically ill children aged 0–21 across PICU/PCICU/PPCU, with rapid response involvement.

Qualifications

  • NP: Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Physician Assistant Program, Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree preferred.
  • NP: PNP-AC or PNP-AC/PC. NPs are not being considered for this position.
  • PA: PA-C
  • NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as an NP.
  • PA: Current medical license issued by the NCMB with authorization to practice as a Physician Assistant.
  • Both: State and Federal DEA unrestricted prescriptive authority
  • Experience: Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant experience in a pediatric acute care clinical setting strongly preferred. 2+ years of ICU nursing experience also preferred.
  • Life support: BLS, PALS; ACLS recommended

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care for critically ill pediatric patients in PICU/PCICU/PPCU.
  • Collaborate with supervising physician on care plans.
  • Participate in rapid response and code blue teams.
  • Engage in education, consultation, research and leadership within Duke Health.
  • Develop and document plans of care based on patient assessments and pathophysiology

Job Summary

The Duke Hospital Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP), includes both Nurse Practitioner (NP) and/or Physician Assistant (PA), provides direct patient care services for critically ill pediatric patients aged 0-21 with acute, complex, critical, and chronic illness across a variety of care settings. It is appropriate for the APP to provide care for an aging pediatric patient beyond the age of 21 with a pediatric condition for a limited period of time. Pediatric Critical Care medicine APPs will care for patients either in the Pediatric Intensive Care unit (PICU), Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care unit (PCICU), or Pediatric Progressive Care Unit (PPCU). In addition, APPs will provide critical care management on the Rapid Response and Code blue teams.

Utilizing acquired knowledge of physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology, the PCCM APP exercises independent decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and development of the plan of care for patients on the PCCM service. In collaboration and consultation with the supervising physician, the PCCM APP contributes to excellence in patient care. As an advanced practice provider, the PCCM APP is additionally involved in education, consultation, research and leadership throughout the Duke Health System, organization and profession.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education

Job Hours

12 hours Night shifts. Schedule may be modified by the clinical or leadership team when needed.
