UIHSMG (Mission Cancer + Blood) seeks an Advanced Practice Provider to co-manage oncology and hematology patients in the hospital setting under physician direction.

You will perform history and exams, order tests, participate in care planning, educate patients and families, and ensure precise documentation across EMR systems while maintaining confidentiality and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Unrestricted NP or PA license to practice in Iowa.
  • Active Medical Staff privileges at participating hospitals.
  • Participating provider status with Medicare/Medicaid and federal programs.
  • Unrestricted DEA number and state permits.

Responsibilities

Job description

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities

Under the direction of physicians and administration, the APP will provide medical care to and co-manage oncology and hematology patients in the hospital setting, consistent with established practice standards.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Provides professional, compassionate, personalized care to patients and families.
  • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
  • Keeps current with hospital and clinic standards of care, including complying with mandatory education, completing CME requirements as required by federal and state regulations, etc.
  • Regularly attends and actively participates in committee and staff meetings, when requested.
  • Demonstrates regard for the dignity and respect for all patients, their families, guests, and representatives of other organizations, as well as fellow employees, volunteers, and medical staff.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and abides by all federal and state regulations in practice and billing.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for individual performance and efficient utilization of practice resources.
  • Maintains appropriate aseptic technique for preparation, procedures, and medications administered.
  • Performs appropriate medical procedures within scope of practice as defined by credentialing and privileging processes.
  • Performs history, physical exam, and review of pertinent records and results of the inpatient hematology/oncology patient.
  • Works alongside physician to communicate pertinent results, treatment options, risks, and benefits to patients and families.
  • Assists in development, delivery, and evaluation/revision of patient’s health care plan.
  • Provides education to patients and families about disease processes, interventions, and plan of care.
  • Prescribes medications and makes recommendations for other therapeutic treatments and/or testing.
  • Facilitates administration of chemotherapy/anti-cancer therapies at physicians’ direction.
  • Completes medical record documentation in a timely manner with accuracy.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in use of various EMR systems.
  • Consults appropriate specialty services to collaborate in patient’s care. Provides adequate information to consulting service and communicates requests in a timely manner. Responds to such requests in a professional and timely manner.
  • Communicates professionally and accurately both verbally and in writing.
  • Utilizes practice/hospital approved apps/technology to relay/communicate patient information.
  • Maintains a professional relationship with other services and staff and responds to queries in a timely manner.
  • Promote and participate in an environment of teamwork.
  • Shares pertinent patient information with primary oncologist team and helps to facilitate smooth transition to the outpatient setting. Assists in coordinating outpatient follow up and delivery of care.
  • Addresses oncologic emergencies and complications of therapy/disease requiring hospitalization.
  • Acts according to current guidelines for co-management with hospitalist services.
  • Communicates clearly and openly with the on-call physician.
  • Relays stat consult to on call physician and assists as necessary.
  • Communicates on call significant events, admissions, and consults to rounding physicians and APPs.
  • Report patient safety concerns to leadership or other appropriate party.
  • Provides pertinent information to coding/referrals office teams.
  • Responds to calls in a timely fashion and in a professional manner.
  • Responds to patient calls and coordinate care in the outpatient setting as appropriate.
  • Attends educational opportunities and participate in CEU opportunities applicable to the inpatient oncology population.
  • Mentor and educate NP/PA students.
  • Assists in other aspects of patient care as determined by rounding/primary team physician.
  • Works a variety of hours as dictated by needs of practice, including but not limited to weekdays, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.

Education Requirements
  • Unrestricted nurse practitioner or physician assistant license to practice in Iowa at all times.
  • Active member in good standing on Medical Staff with appropriate clinical privileges at all participating hospitals in which requested to work at all times.
  • Participating provider status with Medicare and Medicaid programs and from participation in any federally funded health care program, including Medicare or Medicaid at all times
  • Unrestricted federal DEA number and applicable state drug permits at all times
Performance Requirements
Knowledge
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
Skills and Abilities
  • Must be BLS certified; and ACLS where required.
  • Proof of completion of mandatory reporter abuse training specific to population serviced within 3 months of hire date.
  • Familiarity with HER systems used, including ability to navigate multiple HER systems and provide/maintain current records in a timely fashion. Must have and retain a valid driver’s license
