Job summary

Wellpath seeks a Nurse Practitioner to provide medical services to incarcerated patients under supervision at Hartford, Hamden, and Waterbury sites. The role emphasizes exams, chronic care, and infirmary rounds, with strong focus on documentation and patient care.

You will work within state guidelines to maintain SOAP notes, coordinate with site medical leadership, and participate in coverage as needed. This position is available to U.S. residents and offers competitive compensation and benefits.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Advanced NP degree from an accredited program.
  • Experience in medical/surgical, emergency, or trauma preferred.
  • Ability to work in corrections environment.
  • Must hold current NP licensure in the state of employment.
  • Current CPR certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical care to inmates, including exams and rounds.
  • Document progress notes in SOAP format and follow formulary guidelines.
  • Respond to emergencies and manage non-formulary drugs or referrals.
  • Support admission, transfer, and specialty referrals per policy.
  • Maintain confidentiality and participate in facility committees.

How you make a difference

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) under the supervision of the Site Medical Director and other site Physicians, offers a comprehensive range of medical services to incarcerated patients in accordance with established policy and state guidelines. They ensure necessary documentation of services is provided to the Site Medical Director or designee to monitor the provision of clinical services. Additionally, they communicate scheduling changes to the Medical Director and H.S.A. and make arrangements for coverage of medical services if unavailable for an extended period of time .

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides medical care to inmates, including conducting exams, chronic care clinics, and infirmary rounds.
  • Maintains accurate and legible progress note documentation in SOAP format and adheres to formulary guidelines.
  • Responds to emergencies and makes logical decisions regarding non-formulary drugs or off-site referrals.
  • Supports existing policies and procedures for admission, transfer, and specialty consultant referrals.
  • Maintains confidentiality and provides input into facility committees as requested .
Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • A graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • An advanced degree in an approved and accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Experience

  • Prior medical/surgical and/or emergency/trauma experience and corrections experience is preferred .
  • Must have the patience and tact to deal with the inmate patient population and ability to work effectively in the corrections environment.
  • Scheduling flexibility is also required to be able to rotate hours and shifts, if needed, and to be called during emergency situations to provide coverage.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Must have and maintain current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner within the state of employment .
  • Must have and maintain current CPR certification.
