Job summary

Penn Medicine in New Jersey is seeking an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) for outpatient hematology-oncology care. The APN will deliver care in collaboration with a Hematology-Oncology physician, manage patient care autonomously within scope, and participate in education, research, and credentialing activities.

This role emphasizes patient education, documentation in the EHR, advancement through professional development, and precepting students.

Qualifications

• Master of Science required.
• CRNP: Master’s Degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nursing required and > 2.5 years of experience.
• National Board Certification required.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct clinical care for patient population according to established protocols.
• Maintains accurate and confidential medical records in the electronic health record (EHR).
• Identifies self properly to the patient and family and clarifies the role of the nurse practitioner or physician assistant when necessary.
• The APP should function within their scope and refer to the collaborating/supervising physician when outside of scope.
• Participates in performance improvement processes to meet quality of care and service standards.
• Demonstrates awareness of professional responsibility as a role model to peers and members of the health care team.
• Performs approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status.
• Addresses patient and family concerns and creates a therapeutic relationship to provide support.
• Provide patient education, counseling and instruction regarding patient diagnosis, medical treatments, medications, and preventative care.
• Participate in accreditation, compliance and regulatory activities of the organization.
• Precept students and other health care learners.
• Identifies patient/family needs for community resources and refers appropriately.

Summary:

• The Division of Hematology-Oncology is seeking a Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) to provide outpatient care to medical oncology patients. The Advanced Practitioner will provide quality care across the continuum in collaboration with a Hem-Onc physician and be expected to manage patient care autonomously within the scope of his/her professional practice. This provider will be responsible to perform procedures according to credentialing including the prescribing of chemotherapy, providing patient/family education, participating in research as applicable, documenting care according to standards, prescribing cancer related and supportive care therapies, and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team.

• Incumbent is responsible to promote organizational values of patient and visitor satisfaction by demonstrating courtesy and respect for families, visitors and other employees. Cares for patients in all age groups from young adult through geriatrics. Demonstrates competence in the assessment, treatment and care of patients serviced. Works in collaborative practice setting with supervising/collaborating physician to care for patients within the Division of Hematology/Oncology.

Responsibilities:

• The APP should function within their scope and refer to the collaborating/supervising physician when outside of scope, and/or directed by the physician or when requested by the patient and/or family. Performs interventions specific to assigned patient population and collaborative/written agreement.
• Participates in the performance improvement processes to meet quality of care and service standards.
• Demonstrates awareness of professional responsibility as role model to peers and members of the health care team.
• Perform approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status.
• Addresses patient and family concerns and creates a therapeutic relationship to provide support.
• Provide patient education, counseling and instruction regarding patient diagnosis, medical treatments, medications, and preventative care.
• Participate in and support accreditation, compliance and regulatory activities of the organization.
• Precept students and other health care learners.
• Identifies patient/family needs for community resources and refers appropriately.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

• Master of Science (Required)
• CRNP: Master's Degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nursing required and > 2.5 years of experience. Acute Care Certification preferred.
• The APP must be reviewed by the Credentials Committee and approved by the Medical Board. National Board Certification required.

Credentials:

• ACLS (For providers in the acute care setting) required
• BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (For providers in the ambulatory setting) required

Certified Nurse Practitioner:

• PA and/or NJ CRNP licensure (CRNP) required.
• Prescriptive Authority (Required)
• PA and/or NJ Prescriptive Authority required.
• Registered Nurse - PA (Required)
• PA and/or NJ RN licensure (RN) required.
