Job summary

Wellpath, in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Corrections, seeks a Nurse Practitioner to deliver comprehensive medical care to incarcerated patients at the KY Correctional Institution for Women. Under supervision, you will perform exams, manage chronic conditions, and assist with on-call coverage to ensure timely care.

Required are an RN license, an NP degree, CPR certification, and prior medical/surgical or corrections experience.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Advanced degree in an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current NP licensure in the state of employment and CPR certification.
  • Corrections experience preferred; scheduling flexibility required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides medical care to inmates, including examinations and chronic care clinics.
  • Maintains SOAP progress notes and adheres to formulary guidelines.
  • Responds to emergencies and coordinates referrals as needed.
  • Supports policies for admission, transfer, and specialty consultations.
  • Maintains confidentiality and participates in facility committees.

How you make a difference

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) under the supervision of the Site Medical Director and other site Physicians, offers a comprehensive range of medical services to incarcerated patients in accordance with established policy and state guidelines. They ensure necessary documentation of services is provided to the Site Medical Director or designated monitor of the provision of clinical services. Additionally, they communicate scheduling changes to the Medical Director and H.S.A. and make arrangements for coverage of medical services if unavailable for an extended period of time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides medical care to inmates, including conducting exams, chronic care clinics, and infirmary rounds.
  • Maintains accurate and legible progress note documentation in SOAP format and adheres to formulary guidelines.
  • Responds to emergencies and makes logical decisions regarding non-formulary drugs or off-site referrals.
  • Supports existing policies and procedures for admission, transfer, and specialty consultant referrals.
  • Maintains confidentiality and provides input into facility committees as requested.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
  • A graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • An advanced degree in an approved and accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Experience
  • Prior medical/surgical and/or emergency/trauma experience and corrections experience is preferred.
  • Must have the patience and tact to deal with the inmate patient population and ability to work effectively in the corrections environment.
  • Scheduling flexibility is also required to be able to rotate hours and shifts, if needed, and to be called during emergency situations to provide coverage.
Licenses/Certifications
  • Must have and maintain current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner within the state of employment.
  • Must have and maintain current CPR certification.
