Job summary

UAB Medicine in Birmingham, AL is seeking an Inpatient Cardiology Nurse Practitioner to provide advanced practice nursing care to adults with acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions in the hospital setting.

The NP collaborates with cardiologists and the care team to develop individualized plans, perform comprehensive assessments, manage medications, and participate in rounding, admissions, discharges, and education for patients and families.

Qualifications

• Current Alabama Nurse Practitioner license in good standing required.
• National certification as a Nurse Practitioner (AANP or ANCC) required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
• DEA registration (or eligibility) required.
• Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program required.
• Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience as an NP; prior experience in cardiology, internal medicine, or critical care strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive assessments of hospitalized adult patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions, including histories, physical examinations, and evaluation of changes in clinical status.
• Develop and manage individualized plans of care in collaboration with the cardiologist and interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients within the Nurse Practitioner's education, certification, scope of practice, collaborative practice protocol, and hospital privileges.
• Manage medications and therapeutic interventions, including initiating, adjusting, and monitoring treatment as appropriate and consistent with established protocols and the patient's clinical condition.
• Provide inpatient clinical care, including daily rounding, admissions, consultations, progress evaluations, transfers, and discharges for patients assigned to the Cardiology service.
• Provide patient and family education on cardiovascular disease management, risk reduction, medication adherence, and lifestyle modifications.
• Coordinate patient care with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to promote safety and quality outcomes and participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Job Description

The Inpatient Cardiology Nurse Practitioner provides advanced practice nursing care to adult patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions in the inpatient hospital setting. The Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively with cardiologists, physicians, nursing staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to provide high-quality, evidence-based patient care.

• Perform comprehensive assessments of hospitalized adult patients with acute and chronic cardiovascular conditions, including histories, physical examinations, and evaluation of changes in clinical status.
• Develop and manage individualized plans of care in collaboration with the cardiologist and interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients within the Nurse Practitioner's education, certification, scope of practice, collaborative practice protocol, and hospital privileges.
• Manage medications and therapeutic interventions, including initiating, adjusting, and monitoring treatment as appropriate and consistent with established protocols and the patient's clinical condition.

• Recognize and respond to changes in patient condition and cardiovascular emergencies, providing appropriate intervention and escalating care to the cardiologist or other providers when indicated.
• Complete accurate and timely clinical documentation, including histories and physicals, progress notes, orders, discharge summaries, and other required medical record documentation.
• Educate and communicate with patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, test results, procedures, discharge instructions, and cardiovascular disease management.
• Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate patient care, promote patient safety and quality outcomes, and participate in quality improvement and other departmental initiatives.
