Job description

Unit: HOSPITALIST NURSE PRACTITIONER – 3 available positions (1 Oncology, 1 Ortho Neuro, 1 Tele)

Job Summary:

Provides primary care to hospitalized patients acting as an assistant to physicians in the inpatient units following established standards and practices. Is involved in the education of patients, families, physicians, and staff.

Specific Duties
  • Works in an independent and interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff, which allows for consultation, collaboration, and referral.
  • Provides diagnosis, treatment, consultation and follow‑up under the supervision of the physician.
  • Maintains legible, accurate and confidential medical records. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnosis, procedures, treatment outcomes, education, referrals and consultations consistent with NCOA, TJC, The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and state regulatory standards.
  • Assists with identification of present on admission (POA) conditions and ensures physician documentation.
  • Educates patients and/or families about preventative care, medical issues and the use of prescribed medical treatments and/or medications.
  • Participates and provides education for the purpose of continuous quality improvement.
  • Promotes core measure compliance.
  • Provides ongoing oversight of appropriateness criteria for patient bed placement.
  • Assists with discharge assessment and planning.

Qualifications

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical demands require performing all essential functions of this position as assigned. If requested, reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • This position may require the use of personal protective equipment during various tasks/activities including but not limited to back support belts, gloves, masks and safety glasses.

Working Conditions:

  • Hospital rooms, common areas, clinical departments and hospital grounds.

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing required.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Experience in acute care and management of acute care patients preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current certification in CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.

Experience Required or Preferred / Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Depending on position must have oncology, ortho/neuro and tele background.
  • Minimum of five years experience in nurse practitioner role preferred.
  • Critical care experience preferred.
  • Effective leadership, teaching, research and communication skills required.
  • Ability to demonstrate complex clinical skills within the framework of the advanced practice nurse.
  • Advanced physical assessment and critical thinking skills required.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments required.
  • Ability to assess medical conditions and interpret findings required.
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary team required.
  • Will consider a new grad NP if they have previous acute nursing experience and are in the process of getting TX NP License.
