Job description

Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner at Worcester County Detention in Snow Hill, MD specializes in the ambulatory care of inmate patients while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. NPs work with a variety of healthcare professionals and security officers in a correctional environment to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. The position is part‑time, 8 hours a week.

Organizational Expectations

  • Promotes culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, reporting, documentation, and prevention.
  • Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments in related scope of job role or practice.
  • Adheres to infection control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
  • Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.
  • Completes required orientation and follows facility and OSHA safety rules.
  • Upholds HIPAA and PREA regulations.
  • Punctual and dependable for assigned/confirmed shifts.
  • Maintains security clearance for the assigned facility.
Job Responsibilities
  • Perform and document medical evaluations on inmate patients consistent with NCCHC, NJ 10-A, ACA, and PBNDS standards.
  • Assess patients’ mental and physical status based on presenting symptoms and complaints.
  • Construct treatment plans incorporating relapse prevention risk management.
  • Write prescriptions for medications as allowed by state regulations and CFG formulary.
  • Monitor patients’ medication adherence.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and nursing staff.
  • Document patient histories, physical assessments, discharge summaries, and transfer orders.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with health care professionals and others.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current, unrestricted RN license in the state of practice.
  • Certified Nurse Practitioner in the state of practice.
  • Current DEA, CDS, and DEA-X licenses.
  • Minimum 2 years of direct patient care as a Nurse Practitioner (preferred).
  • Strong critical thinking, clinical assessment, and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Assertive, empathetic, and objective in‑patient care.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency and accurate electronic documentation skills.
  • Ability to command respect and confidence of inmates and staff.
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Functional Demands

  • Availability for nights, weekends, holidays, and on‑call duties as required.
Physical Demands
  • May regularly be required to stand, sit, walk, reach, bend, kneel, crouch, or stretch for prolonged periods.

  • Ability to communicate and understand written and verbal communication.
