Job description

The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for utilizing training and skills to provide direct patient care under the supervision of a physician. This will be a night time position working 7 days on and 7 days off (after completing training on days).

Responsibilities

• Manage patients in collaboration with cardiothoracic surgeons and critical care intensivists, providing specialty care to patients with acute and chronic problems. Function as the primary responder for all cardiac surgery needs from 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM, remaining in ICU providing continuous active management except as needed to respond to other urgent inpatient/outpatient cardiac surgery needs.
• Triage or address consults for immediate care or elective care.
• Participate in inpatient rounding, writing progress notes, admission/transfer/postoperative orders, scheduling surgery and communication necessary for continuity of care (i.e., sign out at beginning and end of shift).
• Collect data pertinent to the patients' status and perform bedside credentialed procedures.
• Maintain a professional demeanor and promote a positive work environment.
• Perform and/or assist the supervising physician with all aspects of discharge services including discharge planning, discharge summaries, discharge orders and coordinating post‑discharge follow‑up care.
• Work collaboratively with clinical teams in managing cardiac surgery patients in the ICU and other inpatient units.
• Obtain medical histories when necessary.
• Perform physical exams (within established protocol).
• Diagnose, treat and monitor chronic diseases (within protocol guidelines).
• Order diagnostic tests.
• Prescribe or recommend medications for treatment (within protocol guidelines).
• Promote positive lifestyle habits to all patients through education and counseling.
• Ensure charts are signed off by the physician within 7 days.
• Maintain patients' privacy and confidentiality.
• Make follow‑up calls to check patients' progress for any urgent outpatient matters.

Education

• Graduate from an accredited Advanced Practice Nursing Program.

License/Certification

• Current/valid APN license from the state licensing board.
