Job summary

The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia is seeking a Nurse Manager to lead and coordinate day-to-day operations in a patient care unit. The role requires strong nursing leadership, staff supervision, and budget oversight to ensure safe, efficient care.

Minimum qualifications include a BSN and an MSN or related field within five years, plus at least three years of RN experience. Licensure as a Virginia RN with BLS and a valid VA driver’s license for multi-location responsibilities is

Responsibilities

  • Oversees day-to-day operations of assigned patient care areas.
  • Supervises nurses and support staff including RNs, PCTs, technicians, and clerical staff.
  • Manages staffing schedules and adjusts for patient flow.
  • Forecasts and manages the unit budget within the department budget.
  • Develops programs for quality improvement and patient experience.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and high-quality care.
  • Fosters partnerships with clinicians and administrators to achieve goals.
  • Leads shared governance and staff engagement initiatives.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Manages and supports the day-to-day operations of assigned patient care areas.
  • Supervises all nurses and support staff including Registered Nurses, Patient Care Assistants, Technicians, Health Unit Coordinators, and related clerical staff.
  • Oversees the preparation of schedules utilizing wage and flex staff as appropriate, adjusting according to patient flow.
  • Accurately forecasts and manages the budget for the unit and ensures that any expenditures remain within the budget; knowledge of benchmarks such as Paid hour per patient day and Worked hour per patient day.
  • Develops programs that address continuous quality improvement, system enhancement, streamlined processes, patient experience, and overall nurse performance.
  • Ensures compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements specific to the unit supervised.
  • Ensures that the highest quality nursing care is provided to patients and their families.
  • Develops and manages partnerships with clinicians, physicians and administrative counterparts to achieve common goals.
  • Promotes integration of multidisciplinary work groups and manages recruitment, performance, team member engagement, and retention activities of assigned staff.
  • Implements the UVA shared governance nursing model at the unit level, ensuring shared decision making that affects nursing practice, quality improvement, professional development, and research.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited nursing program; Master’s degree in a related field within five years of hire.

Experience: At least three years of progressively more responsible experience as a registered nurse in a patient care environment.

For Dialysis Nurse Manager: Full‑time employee of the facility; at least 12 months of experience in clinical nursing, plus an additional six months of experience providing nursing care to patients on maintenance dialysis.

Licensure: Registered Nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia; American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification; valid Virginia driver’s license required for managers with responsibility for operations in multiple locations; applicable specialty certification at hire or within three years.

The pay range for this role is $110,697.60 – $147,680.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate’s qualifications, prior work experience, and/or education.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling a short distance to attend meetings and programs.
