Job Summary

The Nurse Manager is accountable for the effective delivery of competent, compassionate, and efficient care for specific patient care unit(s) on a 24-hour basis. This includes oversight for clinical operations, human resources, finance, and quality management.

Job Duties

Clinical Operations

• Develop work processes and systems to facilitate excellent patient care outcomes and satisfaction of patients, staff, and physicians.
• Facilitate communication and ensure proper flow of information.
• Oversee patient flow in patient care and support areas.
• Ensure operational effectiveness, emphasizing cost containment without jeopardizing patient care priorities, improvement, innovation, or quality.
• Investigate patient care and administrative problems and keep lines of communication open with directors, managers, and staff to ensure high employee morale and a safe patient care environment.
• Partner with service-wide leadership to interpret policies and procedures, resolving problems related to staffing and utilization of facilities, equipment, and supplies.
• Monitor and evaluate patient care processes and outcomes on the unit(s).
• Facilitate shared governance at the unit level and throughout Nursing Service.
• Represent the organization in relationships with other health organizations, professional organizations, government, and accrediting agencies.
• Collaborate with leaders from local higher education institutions to provide a supportive learning environment for students.
• Partner with professionals on research studies involving patients as study subjects.
• Provide support to staff during the development, implementation, and utilization of information systems that impact patient care.
• Identify internal controls for the department and monitor compliance.

Human Resource Management

• Communicate with nursing staff at all levels in a professional manner.
• Provide leadership and direction for the unit staff, supporting departmental, divisional, and institutional goals.
• Recruit and retain competent staff while monitoring performance standards and promoting fair labor practices.
• Promote a work environment that demonstrates caring, accessibility of safe equipment, and an efficiently arranged setting.
• Achieve performance outcomes through engagement of the nursing staff.
• Lead by example using management techniques that attract and retain staff.
• Mentor staff, evaluate performance, and take corrective action as appropriate.
• Complete employee performance evaluations on time.
• Ensure highest quality care according to national, state, local regulations and voluntary accreditation standards (e.g., JCAHO).
• Develop professional leadership at the unit level.
• Encourage and support staff development.
• Maintain professional affiliations and stay current with healthcare trends.

Financial Management

• Work with leadership to project and prepare annual operating budgets.
• Monitor fiscal budget to control operational and capital expenditures while adjusting staffing patterns to improve productivity.
• Seek guidance to develop plans that enhance revenue and reduce cost inefficiencies.
• Review departmental productivity reports and provide variance summaries to leadership.

Quality Management

• Implement continuous quality improvement and risk management programs at the unit level.
• Monitor patient care operations and initiate changes as needed.
• Maintain nursing policies consistent with the Texas Nurse Practice Act and other legal mandates.
• Support quality programs, including patient and nurse satisfaction and compliance with National Patient Safety Goals and Joint Commission requirements.
• Demonstrate transparency regarding clinical indicators.

Planning and Evaluation

• Assist in developing strategic plans for patient care services and the unit.
• Help implement an annual operational plan based on strategic objectives.
• Assist in evaluating goal achievements and making recommendations.
• Assist with plans for renovation, relocation, and other activities affecting care delivery.

Marginal or Periodic Functions

• Coordinate special projects and participate in interdisciplinary committees and task forces as assigned.
• Perform related duties as required.

Salary Range

Actual salary commensurate with experience.
