Job summary

Hawthorne House, part of First Atlantic Healthcare, seeks a Nurse Manager to lead the Dementia Unit and support the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, and directing daily Nursing Service operations.

Reporting to the DON, you will ensure compliant nursing practice, oversee specialized dementia care, promote resident‑centered care, and foster teamwork and hospitality for our residents. This is a full‑time position on site in Freeport, Maine.

Qualifications

• Licensure & Education: Possess a nursing diploma/AS/BS and be licensed in Maine.
• CPR certification at hire or during orientation and kept current.
• Experience that demonstrates ability to perform duties with excellence.
• Strong written/verbal communication in English, solid computer literacy and EMR experience, and effective leadership.

Responsibilities

• Clinical Oversight & Rounds: conduct rounds, assist with resident care and physician visits as needed.
• Regulatory Compliance & Quality: ensure nursing practice meets standards and participate in surveys and QAPI.
• Staff Leadership & Development: perform evaluations, disciplinary actions, ECS competency, and ongoing staff education.
• Care Planning & Admissions: oversee admissions, participate in care plan meetings, review complaints with follow‑up.
• Infection Control & Safety: implement policies on infection control and report safety concerns.

About the Role

As a lead within a strong clinical team, you support the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Service Department. Reporting directly to the Director of Nursing, you will ensure that nursing practice complies with regulatory requirements, oversee specialized dementia care, promote positive customer relationships, and foster an environment of teamwork, hospitality, and comfort for our residents.

Key Responsibilities

• Clinical Oversight & Rounds: Perform daily clinical rounds on assigned nursing units, participate in routine and daily resident care (such as ADLs, meals, and restorative nursing), and conduct rounds with physicians as necessary.
• Regulatory Compliance & Quality: Ensure nursing practice complies with regulatory standards, participate in state and federal surveys, implement corrective action plans, and actively participate in the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program.
• Staff Leadership & Development: Complete performance evaluations, administer fair disciplinary processes, support electronic charting system (ECS) competency, and implement ongoing education plans for nursing staff.
• Care Planning & Admissions: Oversee the admission process, participate in care plan meetings through the RAI process, ensure care plans reflect current resident needs, and review family, resident, and staff complaints with appropriate follow-up.
• Infection Control & Safety: Implement policies and procedures regarding communicable diseases, infection control, and isolation, while identifying and reporting safety concerns and occupational exposures.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Licensure & Education: Possess a diploma, Associate's (AS), or Bachelor's (BS) degree in nursing, and must be currently registered and licensed in the State of Maine.
• Certifications: Must have CPR certification upon hire or obtained during orientation, which must remain current during employment.
• Experience: Demonstrated knowledge and experience sufficient to perform all duties with excellence.
• Core Skills & Abilities: Strong written and verbal communication skills in the English language, solid computer literacy and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) experience, and effective leadership skills (or the ability to invest in growing them).
