JOB SUMMARY
Reports to the Director. Has 24-hour responsibility for the management of nursing personnel, ancillary personnel, and patient care in the assigned area(s). Contributes to the nursing service department and hospital through support of philosophy, objectives, and educational efforts. Follows, supports, and enforces hospital and nursing service policies and procedures. Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product of service to leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the patient and family experience. As a customer-focused Memorial Health Care team member, he/she must be accessible, flexible, knowledgeable, and responsive.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plans, implements, and evaluates a nursing care delivery system for assigned areas that reflects the hospital and nursing department philosophy using effective principles of leadership and management.
- Identifies problems or potential problems in departments and works with staff to develop solutions to resolve problems.
- Establishes and maintains staff levels for the department so that a responsible, safe level of patient care is provided with continuity and meets productivity standards.
- Provides clinical support and resources for staff.
- Promotes good working relationships among nursing staff members in department, between departments, and with other disciplines and departments.
- Requirements:
- Participation in Nursing Leadership Council (NLC) and Leadership meetings.
- Develops unit based QI initiatives annually and participates in organizational quality initiatives (i.e., core measures, HCAHPs, Value Based Purchasing, and Employee Engagement).
- Participates in policy and procedure development.
- Responsible for ensuring The Joint Commission (TJC) and regulatory compliance.
- Conduicts monthly off-shift rounding.
- Daily rounding on patients and employees.
- Responsible for staff recruitment, retention, hiring, and termination in coordination with Talent Management.
- Oversight for employee education, orientation, development, competency, and certification requirements.
- Serves on minimum of two (2) or organizational commitments not including mandatory leadership meetings.
- Responsible for developing and maintaining compliance with budget and productivity goals.
- Participant in organizational rotational and leadership development programs.
- Responsible for department’s annual budget/preparation.
- Responsible for employee performance evaluations.
- Responsible for joint commission and regulatory compliance.
- Provides mentoring, coaching, and leadership development for clinical coordinators.
- 24/7 departmental responsibility.
- Conducss monthly staff meetings with submission of minutes into NetLearning.
- Conduces all written and formal disciplines with employees in coordination with Talent Management.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
- Active RN Michigan license.
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing required or must be enrolled.
- ACLS required (excluding Behavioral Health.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Departmental specific requirements as outlined in Attachment A.
EXPERIENCE
- Five years of hospital clinical nursing experience.
- Minimum two years nursing experience in specialty area.
- One year of nursing supervision experience in an acute care setting required within the most recent two years.
- Previous management experience preferred.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES/MOTOR SKILLS
- Able to travel independently throughout all Memorial Healthcare facilities.
- Small motor skills required for operating modern computer, office, and telephone equipment as utilized by Memorial Healthcare (MHC).
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL ABILITIES
- Hand‑eye coordination.
- Fine motor skills for administration of medications, starting IVs, insertion, and maintenance of various tubes (NG, catheter, etc.), dressing changes, assessment techniques, etc. when needed.
- Use computer.
- Proficiency using modern office, computer and telephone equipment as used by Memorial Healthcare.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL ABILITIES
- Those required of a staff RN plus the ability to effectively problem solve.

- Visually assess patient’s condition and to auscultate and palpate as needed for assessment or treatment.

- Able to see for the purpose of reading information received in formats including but not limited to paper, computer, reports, bulletins, updates, manuals.
- Able to hear for work‑related purposes.
