The Permanent/IntermittentNurse Instructor - School of Psychiatric Technology (SOPT)will be directed by the Supervising Registered Nurse (SOPT Program Director) in the Psychiatric Technician Program at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

  • Accurately instruct adult learners in professional nursing principles and techniques in planning, organizing, and conducting educational courses in Psychiatric Nursing, Developmental Disabilities and Nursing Science
  • Supervise clinical training of Psych Tech students and assist them to meet clinical objectives
  • Heavy lifting up to 30 pounds when required
  • Communicate effectively
  • Possess classroom management skills
  • Possess knowledge of medications and medication medical/psychiatric administration terminology
  • Participate in the evaluation and development of educational programs and policy
  • Evaluate progress and performance of students
  • Tutor and counsel as needed

Working Conditions

This position requires you to work within the Secured Treatment Area (STA).

In-office and travel to provide coverage at clinical sites as north as King City and as south as Santa Maria. Hours are as needed. Will provide clinical coverage. Hours vary depending on clinical site assignment 0530-1515.

The Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero is a secure public sector hospital providing inpatient forensic services for mentally ill adult males who are court committed throughout the State of California.
