The Nurse in Professional Development (NPD) Specialist (MSN) demonstrates mastery of the specific knowledge and skills required for a specialty area of nursing. This position is accountable for the development and application of standards and evidence-based practice to enhance the quality of care to the patient and family. A self-directed advanced practitioner, the primary function of this position is that of an expert practitioner with essential education, consultant, researcher and managerial components. The NPD Specialist works collaboratively with the leadership team in conducting needs assessments/gap analyses to identify interventions to address gaps in performance. The Nurse in Professional Development Specialist will develop, plan, and implement education that facilitates the professional growth, skill development, initial/ongoing competence, and attainment of standards of care to enhance patient safety for direct care providers. They evaluate outcomes of interventions, with a focus on quality, safety, and staff development.
