Position Summary

The Nurse Extern is a member of the nursing team who contributes to the comfort and well‑being of patients by performing specifically assigned tasks and working under the direction of the Registered Nurse within scope of practice.

Education and Qualifications

• Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with completion of the first semester including fundamentals of nursing course.
• Recent graduate of an accredited program within six months.
• Current Certified Nursing Assistant licensure in Florida (Preferred). 
• American Heart Association BLS for Health Care Providers (Preferred).
• Two letters of recommendation from a nursing school instructor or employer.
• For each subsequent semester, proof of continued enrollment and progress toward graduation.
• Maximum of two and one‑half years as Nursing Extern.

Responsibilities

• Assist Registered Nurses with assigned nursing tasks.
• Help facilitate patient comfort and well‑being.
• Participate in team decision making and support shared decision‑making model.
• Utilize JMC Pathway tools to support objective, data‑driven decision making.
• Ensure patient safety and provide safe passage using six dimensions of Relationship‑Based Care.

Physical Requirements

• Must stoop, sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time.
• Must frequently assist lifting patients and heavy equipment.
• Must be able to push/pull up to 40 lbs and lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment independently, making sound decisions and paying attention to detail.

Threshold Requirements

• Annual Joint Commission mandatory education requirements.
• In‑service and health requirements, including new employee orientation.
• TB/PPD surveillance program.
• Maintenance of required professional licensing and/or certification(s).
