Job summary

Wellstar Health System is seeking a Nurse Extern to support licensed staff and assist in patient care under supervision. This unlicensed role helps with basic nursing tasks, vital signs, and care activities to contribute to patient comfort and safety.

You must be enrolled in an ADN or BSN program, have completed Nursing Fundamentals, and hold a BLS certification. Join us to work in Georgia's integrated health system and gain hands-on experience.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must have completed Nursing Fundamentals and be actively enrolled in an ADN or BSN program.
• BLS - Basic Life Support certification required at hire.

Responsibilities

• Vital signs, AM/PM care, I&O measurement, tube feedings, simple dressing changes, ostomy care, and care related to indwelling catheters.
• Phlebotomy, capillary blood glucose monitoring, specimen collection, finger and heel sticks as required by a registered nurse.
• Assist with tracheostomy care, discontinue peripheral IV lines, and in-line suctioning for ventilated patients as directed by a nurse.
• Ensure proper labeling and prompt delivery of laboratory specimens; coordinate unit activities to meet patient needs; act as runner between pharmacy, pathology, and x-ray.
• Perform other duties as assigned and respond promptly to emergencies under nurse supervision; maintain safety and hand-off communication.
• Comply with Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Job Summary:

The Nurse Extern is an unlicensed staff member who supports licensed, professional staff in providing care and service to all patients & families. Under direct supervision of a registered nursing professional, performs a variety of basic to intermediate level nursing care activities that contribute to the comfort and safety of patients. Supports the plan of care for assigned patients. The Patient Care Extern works directly with a nursing preceptor and assists in managing the preceptor's patient load.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

• Under supervision, performs tasks to include, but not limited to Vital Signs, AM/PM Care, I & O measurement, tube feedings (bolus, gravity, pump), simple dressing changes, post mortem care, pin care (orthopedic patients), ostomy care, discontinuing indwelling urinary catheters, urine collection.
• Under supervision, performs tasks to include, but not limited to Phlebotomy, capillary blood glucose monitoring, specimen collection, finger and heel sticks (as required by a registered nurse).
• Under supervision and nurse unit dependent, perform tasks to include but not limited to: tracheostomy care, discontinuing peripheral intravenous lines, in-line suctioning of ventilator patients.
• Under supervision, perform tasks to include, but not limited to: ensure laboratory specimens are properly labeled and promptly delivered to appropriate departments, assist in the coordination of unit activities to ensure that patients' needs are met efficiently, serve as a runner between pharmacy, pathology, and x-ray.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Reacts promptly and appropriately to emergency situations, provides input into the plan of care by reporting pertinent information involving patient/family to the appropriate nurse, provide safe transportation to ancillary departments while utilizing hand-off communications.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Education:

• High School Diploma / GED General

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

• BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor or BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support

Required Minimum Experience:

Less than 1 year Must have completed Nursing Fundamentals and be actively enrolled in an ADN or BSN Program Required
