Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC is seeking a Nurse Extern to join the nursing team as a valued PRN opportunity. You will gain hands-on experience across the Registered Nurse scope while delivering compassionate, safe patient care and learning under a supervisor or preceptor.

As you progress through your nursing program, you will build skills, confidence, and a plan for your career in healthcare, with opportunities to grow within the Mission Hospital system.

Qualifications

• BLS/CPR certification within 30 days of start date.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program.
• NC CNA certification held or in process.

Responsibilities

• Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), monitor vital signs, support mobility, and ensure comfort and hygiene.
• Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, and specimen collection as competency grows.
• Document care accurately and communicate updates to the nursing team.
• Explain care plans to patients and families and provide guidance for health and recovery.
• Maintain clean, safe patient areas and follow infection prevention practices.
• Engage in learning opportunities and work with supervisor to develop a personal career plan.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you‘ll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands‑on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You‘ll help deliver safe, compassionate care that improves patients‘ lives while building the skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Responsibilities

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene
• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency
• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated
• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery
• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment
• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

What qualifications you will need

• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• Currently enrolled and in good standing in a nursing program where the controlling institution of the nursing program is accredited under 21 NCAC (b)(1).
