Job summary

Barnes-Jewish Hospital is seeking a Graduate Nurse for the Trauma Unit (6400 & 6500) on nights. This full-time role supports patients with traumatic injuries in Missouri's busiest Level I Trauma Center. The position offers mentorship, a Nurse Residency Program, and a three-shift schedule.

New graduates will join a family-oriented team dedicated to excellence in trauma and acute care surgeries. A sign-on bonus of up to $15,000 is available.

Qualifications

• Nursing Diploma/Associate's required; licensure within 90 days of graduation.
• Bachelor's Degree preferred in Nursing.
• No prior experience required.

Responsibilities

• Promotes patient- and family-centered care in a healing environment.
• Educates patients and families on illness/injury management and home care needs.
• Develops and implements individual care plans with the healthcare team.
• Evaluates patient response and updates plans as needed.
• Participates in patient safety, quality initiatives and professional development.

The Trauma Department at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is the busiest Level I Trauma Center in Missouri, caring for more than 14,500 trauma patients annually. Nationally recognized for excellence in trauma care, our multidisciplinary team delivers compassionate, high-quality care to patients with some of the most complex and critical injuries.

About Units 6400 & 6500

Units 6400 and 6500 are combined Trauma, Geriatric Trauma, and Acute Care Surgery nursing divisions with a total capacity of 63 beds. Nurses on these units develop specialized expertise while caring for a diverse patient population with traumatic injuries and acute surgical conditions.

Patient Populations Include

• Motor vehicle accident injuries
• Gunshot and stab wounds
• Traumatic amputations
• Fall-related injuries
• Spinal cord injuries
• Traumatic brain injuries

In addition to trauma patients, nurses provide care for acute care surgery patients admitted through the Emergency Department.

Overview

Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. The Surgical Services Department provides pre-op and post-op inpatient care to those patients undergoing specialty surgical procedures in the areas of abdominal solid organ transplant, vascular surgery, hepatobiliary, trauma, ear-nose and throat, orthopedic, colo-rectal, urology and other general surgical procedures. Inpatient care in this department focuses on pre-op needs, post-op care and treatment after phase I recovery through discharge from an inpatient nursing division. The department's surgical observation unit and ICU provide intensive care and treatment to those post-op or post-traumatic patients whose condition requires treatment at this level.

Preferred Qualifications

Role Purpose

The Graduate Nurse provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care after completing a nursing program and before licensure. Will be required to obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation from an accredited school of nursing to remain employed in a HSO in the state of Missouri.

Responsibilities

• Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
• Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate patient's physical, psychosocial and emotional needs.
• Develops and implements individual plans of care in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care.
• Evaluates patient's response and modifies plan of care accordingly throughout the patient's stay.
• Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
