Job summary

Momentum Power in New York, NY is seeking a nuclear engineer to develop reactor and nuclear-island systems, working across disciplines rather than in a single area. You will contribute to reactor-system configurations and document the basis for engineering decisions.

The ideal candidate has a PhD in nuclear engineering and 4+ years of design or analysis experience, with strong technical writing and the ability to build and document calculations.

Qualifications

  • PhD in nuclear engineering or closely related discipline.
  • 4+ years in nuclear design, analysis, operations, research, or systems engineering.
  • Foundation in at least one area (reactor TH, reactor physics/core design, nuclear safety, fuel, plant dynamics/controls, or nuclear systems engineering).
  • Experience building and documenting engineering calculations or models with explicit assumptions.
  • Ability to distinguish preliminary engineering judgment from licensing-quality evidence.
  • Strong technical writing and review skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop reactor-system configurations: core, pressure vessel, containment, and related subsystems.
  • Translate mission requirements into engineering criteria and document decision basis.
  • Perform first-principles calculations, reduced-order models, and trade studies.
  • Support operating states, accident scenarios, safety functions, and acceptance criteria.
  • Prepare inputs for consultants, laboratories, and suppliers; review deliverables.
  • Support design-maturity gates, licensing interfaces, and safety-case documentation.

Job description

Location: New York, NY or Remote (U.S.). Remote candidates are welcome to apply.

The Role

You will develop reactor and nuclear-island systems and analyses, working across disciplines rather than inside a single one. We are looking for someone with a solid foundation in one nuclear-engineering area and the appetite to work across reactor physics, thermal-hydraulics, safety, fuel, mechanical systems, controls, and licensing interfaces.

  • Contribute to development and evaluation of reactor-system configurations: core, reactor pressure vessel, primary systems, containment, decay-heat removal, emergency cooling, I&C, and supporting nuclear-island systems.
  • Help translate mission requirements, subsea deployment constraints, and regulatory strategy into engineering requirements and design criteria, and document the basis for decisions.
  • Perform first-principles calculations, reduced-order models, and trade studies; build plant models using system-analysis and reactor-physics tools.
  • Support definition of operating states, initiating events, accident scenarios, safety functions, and acceptance criteria.
  • Prepare technical inputs for consultants, laboratories, and suppliers, and support review of their deliverables.
  • Support design-maturity gates, NRC pre-application activities, licensing-basis development, and safety-case documentation.
  • Develop and document nuclear-system interfaces with subsea structures, installation and retrieval, electrical export, and remote operations.
Qualifications
  • PhD in nuclear engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • 4+ years in nuclear design, analysis, operations, research, or systems engineering. Directly relevant graduate research may count toward part of this.
  • A solid foundation in at least one of: reactor thermal-hydraulics, reactor physics or core design, nuclear safety analysis, fuel performance, plant dynamics and controls, or nuclear systems engineering — and genuine interest in working across the others.
  • Experience building and documenting engineering calculations or models, including assumptions, methods, and limitations.
  • Ability to distinguish preliminary engineering judgment from validated analysis and licensing-quality evidence.
  • Strong technical writing and review skills.
Nice to Have
  • Advanced degree in nuclear engineering or a related field.
  • Boiling-water reactors, natural-circulation systems, SMRs, advanced reactors, or marine nuclear systems.
  • TRACE, RELAP5, PARCS, MELCOR, SCALE, MCNP, Serpent, OpenMC, FRAPCON, SNAP, or equivalent; Python or MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with 10 CFR Part 50, 52, or 53 licensing, risk-informed design, PRA, or nuclear QA.
  • Experience coordinating consultants, laboratories, universities, or major equipment suppliers.

Base salary, meaningful equity, and full benefits, including 401(k), medical/dental/vision, paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave, subject to company plans and policies. Compensation reflects role scope, relevant experience, technical depth, and expected impact.

Compensation Range: $100,000 - $120,000 base salary, plus stock options, commensurate with experience.
