Job summary

Waterbury Health seeks a Per Diem Nuclear Medicine Technologist to perform cardiac SPECT and related nuclear medicine procedures. The role reports to the Assistant Director of the Cardiac Diagnostic Center and operates under clinical direction to ensure high quality diagnostic imaging.

Responsibilities include dose preparation, quality control, patient education, data management, and adherence to NRC and IAC standards. Per diem status with a $20/hr bonus above base pay applies.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nuclear medicine program.
  • Certified NM technologist by NMTCB or ARRT required.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains NRC logs: receipt, usage, disposal, returned doses.
  • Prepares and injections radiopharmaceutical doses.
  • Performs quality control on camera, calibration instruments, radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Adheres to Radiation Safety policies and IAC standards.
  • Educates patients about radiopharmaceutical uses and precautions.

Job description

This is a Per Diem Tier 3 assignment covering a vacancy. There are no benefits/PL associated with this position. You will receive a $20/hr bonus pay on top of base pay. Assignment dates are subject to change at any time.

The nuclear medicine technologist is proficient in the use of imaging equipment to produce high quality images for diagnostic purposes. Performs nuclear medicine studies: including stress testing, MUGA scans and viability studies. Population served is primarily adolescent, adult and older adult. Reports to the Assistant Director of the Cardiac Diagnostic Center and works under the general direction of the lead nuclear medicine technologist and clinical direction of the medical director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintains logs in accordance with NRC regulations: receipt, usage, disposal, returned doses
  • Prepares and injections individual patient radiopharmaceutical dose
  • Performs quality control: camera, calibration instruments, and radiopharmaceuticals
  • Maintains radiation safety: adheres to WH policy, knows/uses radiation safety standards
  • Educates patients regarding radiopharmaceutical uses and precautions, test; answers patient questions
  • Performs cardiac SPECT studies also performing gated computer analysis as appropriate
  • Prepares acquired data for physician review, reading
  • Upon completion of patient studies stores data on optical media
  • Per state request, issues documentation to all patients receiving radiation
  • Prepares CD of raw data for release to patient or physician as properly requested
  • Completes orders to drop patient charge
  • Maintain adequate records of all exams; complete required recordkeeping
  • Maintain equipment, room and work area to ensure patient and staff safety
  • Independently manages nuclear schedule while working collaboratively and cooperatively with other professional and technical staff at the center
  • Works collaboratively with lead nuclear tech to maintain IAC nuclear standards and accreditation
  • Participate in quality assurance measures, including audits, surveys, and data collection
  • Performs reminder calls for next day nuclear patients
  • Provides technical support for test set-up, IV start, test description
  • Accepts after hours calls for nuclear dose ordering or calls from supplier
  • Operates the case stress testing system, entering data, taking BP and assisting professional staff in the lab during the test as assigned
  • Enters demographic data in the cardiopoint system
  • Assists with faxing test results and other support duties as assigned
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Graduate of an accredited nuclear medicine program
  • One (1) to three (3) years adult nuclear medicine experience
  • Certified nuclear medicine technologist by the NMTCB or ARRT required
  • Knowledgeable of nuclear medicine techniques, principles and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of IAC nuclear standards
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Ability to work independently making technical decisions to obtain comprehensive and accurate information and convey clearly to physicians for diagnosis/treatment
  • Must possess good communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Must complete continuing education hours as required for individual certification and IAC accreditation providing documentation as requested
  • Experience with cardiac SPECT preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment including exposure to all patient elements, i.e. blood borne pathogens, lifting, stretching, pulling of patients, pushing of stretchers. Standing/walking required, as well as the ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.
  • Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility.
