Job description

Summary

The Nuclear Medical Technologist is responsible for operating diagnostic imaging equipment to help diagnose and treat diseases. This position prepares and administers purified unstable atoms to patients causing radiopharmaceuticals to emit radiation, which indicates the presence of disease, based on metabolic changes in the patient's body. In addition, this position assists Radiologists as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Performs quality assurance for all equipment (i.e. gamma cameras, thyroid probe, well counter, dose calibrator, Geiger counters).
  • Uses quality control techniques as part of a quality assurance program covering all procedures and products in the laboratory.
  • Calculates, measures, and records radiation dosage or radiopharmaceuticals received, used and disposed, using computer and following physician's prescription.
  • Detects and maps radiopharmaceuticals in patients' bodies, using a camera to produce digital computer images.
  • Explains test procedures and safety precautions to patients and provides them with assistance during test procedures.
  • Administers radiopharmaceuticals or radiation to patients to detect or treat diseases, using radioisotope equipment, under direction of physician.
  • Provides images, data analysis, and patient information to the physician for diagnostic interpretation.
  • Uses radiation detection devices and other kinds of laboratory equipment that measure the quantity and distribution of radionuclides deposited in the patient or in a patient specimen.
  • Performs in vivo and in vitro diagnostic procedures.
  • Assures proper quality of images for each radiological procedure.
  • Obtains proper patient/image requisition identification in order to assure appropriateness of procedure.
  • Conducts patient/family education relevant to identified needs.
  • Provides care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience

1-2 years of relevant experience preferred; new graduates may be considered.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree required.

Licenses / Certifications

Valid NY State RT License. AART and/or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) required.
