Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is hiring a Nuclear Medicine Technologist to assist physicians in diagnosing diseases through nuclear medicine imaging. You will calibrate equipment, ensure radiation safety, and perform organ visualization studies using radiopharmaceuticals.

Responsibilities include documenting results, preparing reports, managing radiopharmaceuticals, and supporting other modalities as needed. Weekend/shift requirements apply within rotating schedules.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology required.
  • Licensure to work as Nuclear Medicine Technologist in Massachusetts.
  • Registration or registry eligible by national certifying bodies (NMT/ACR/SNM).
  • BLS healthcare provider certification before end of probation.
  • DOT certification in Radioactive Waste.

Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians in nuclear medicine testing to produce organ images using radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Calibrate equipment and adhere to radiation safety guidelines to minimize exposure.
  • Perform organ visualization and function tests to produce diagnostic scans.
  • Record calculations and prepare test reports for physician review.
  • Order, stock, label, and manage radiopharmaceuticals and supplies.
  • Assist in other areas/modalities when needed.

Under general supervision of the Nuclear Medicine Coordinator, and in accordance with guidelines, assists physicians in the diagnosis of disease by performing nuclear medicine testing which produces images of patient organs and circulating systems through the use of radiopharmaceuticals.

Calibrates equipment and closely follows radiation safety guidelines to ensure quality control and limited radiation exposure to patient, self and work area.

Performs related clerical and service duties.

Ensures quality and safe delivery of care to patients of all ages.

I. Major Responsibilities:
  • 1. Reviews physician orders prior to patient testing to determine appropriate dosing of radioisotopes for injection or oral administration. Verifies radioisotope measurement, count, and dose calibration.
  • 2. Explains nuclear medicine procedures being performed to the patient and answers any patient questions; observes patient condition or negative reactions; injects appropriately calibrated radiopharmaceuticals intravenously.
  • 3. Performs organ visualization procedures and function tests (i.e thyroid uptakes, renograms and dynamic blood flow studies) to produce scans suitable for use in the medical evaluation and diagnosis of a patient's physical condition. Utilizes gamma camera to photograph organs identified by the radioactive materials administered; scans images produced on computer screen, notes unclear areas and adjusts equipment accordingly; selects and produces desired images on film.
  • 4. Records computer calculations and measurements of organs, blood vessels, etc., and prepares test reports along with patient scan for physician to review; investigates and supplies any additional information relative to test interpretation (i.e patient medical history and condition) and assists in the correlation of clinical laboratory and radiologic results as they relate to the nuclear medicine procedures.
  • 5. Orders and stocks radiopharmaceuticals in an orderly fashion; prepares and labels solutions and reagents. Maintains adequate shielding of radioactive material in storage and during transportation to the testing are. Informs the Nuclear Medicine Coordinator of supply shortages and assists in inventorying sectional supplies and radiopharmaceuticals.
  • 6. Assists in other areas/modalities as needed.

  • 2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
  • 3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • 4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

  • 6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • 7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education: Required:

  • 1. Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of a degree in nuclear medicine technology.
  • 2. Registration or registry eligible as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist by the American College of Radiology, NMT or the Society of Nuclear Medicine (NMTB).
  • 3. Licensure to work as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist in the Commonweath of Massachusetts.
  • 4. BLS healthcare provider required before completion of 90 day probationary period.
  • 5. D.O.T. Certified in Radioactive Waste.

Experience/Skills: Preferred:

  • 1. Experience preferred, but not required. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
