Job Summary
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist assists with providing safe, appropriate care to the patient by performing all exams provided by the department per department procedures. The technologist has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study. He/she is responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the utilization of the equipment for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases. The technologist can independently perform job functions. He/she sets up the equipment to provide imaging service and positions patient for the procedure.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Verifies proper clinician order for procedure and obtains complete clinical history, gathers examination data, and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
- Follows established procedures for the administration of radiopharmaceuticals and ensures no patient condition deteriorates or suffers undue pain.
- Ensures all studies have proper patient identification; uses right and left markers appropriately.
- Reviews images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients.
- Responds to emergency situations and maintains life support equipment.
- Assists other technologists in all modalities when needed.
- Observes patient condition and evaluates situations where physician intervention is needed.
- Verifies correct patient identification using two unique identifiers prior to performing a procedure.
- Maintains patients’ privacy, dignity and comfort throughout the exam.
- Demonstrates competence in the determination and application of appropriate procedures, equipment, supplies and techniques.
- Organizes schedule and priorities to accomplish required activities within designated time frames.
- Uses critical thinking skills and follows physicians’ instructions during procedures.
- Communicates with patient/family and seeks clarification on ambiguous orders.
- Prepares the patient for the procedure, uses sterile technique, and maintains competency with venipuncture.
- Reports problems regarding malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider and maintains equipment per infection control policy.
- Explains the purpose and nature of the exam to patients using AIDET and addresses questions or contraindications.
- Participates in departmental training and education of employees, completing mandatory departmental and hospital-wide education.
- Consistently produces acceptable images, checking equipment calibration, and ensuring studies are transmitted to PACS promptly.
- Assists in restocking supplies, maintaining department cleanliness, and performing patient charging activities.
- Performs routine clerical duties, informs supervisor of responsibilities and potential problems, and maintains productivity equivalent to other co‑workers.
- Maintains Joint Commission standards and other regulatory agency standards.
- Provides general assistance to department as needed.
Education and Communications
Patiently and clearly explains purpose and nature of exam to patient prior to starting of procedure. Acknowledges, introduces, discusses, explains, and thanks all patients and family members. Uses AIDET consistently throughout patient interaction.
Required Minimum Education
- High School Diploma – Accounting
- Accredited Program, Radiologic Science or Accredited Program, Other
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)
- ARRT-N – ARRT Nuclear Technology or CNMT – Cert Nuclear Med Tech
- BLS – Basic Life Support or BLS-I – Basic Life Support – Instructor
Required Minimum Experience
- Minimum 1 year experience in a clinical setting caring for patients (may include clinical rotations).
- Required 1 year NM experience.

- Excellent communication skills – verbal and written with physicians, patients, visitors, and staff.
- Ability to explain or give directions to maintain goodwill and attain cooperation.
- Function independently and under pressure while participating in a team environment.
- Excellent customer service skills at all times.
- Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast paced work environment.
- Prioritize appropriately, detail oriented, and multi-task simultaneously.
- Professional interaction with a variety of customers, patients, families, and physicians.
- Willingness to follow all hospital policies and established procedures.
Additional Responsibilities and Notes
The nuclear medicine technologist assists with providing safe, appropriate care to the patient by performing all exams provided by the department per protocols. He/she is responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative. The technologist can independently perform job functions, set up equipment, and position patients for the procedure. The technologist may teach and mentor fellow NM staff if needed.
