Job summary

Vistra is seeking a motivated I&C Technician Apprentice to perform scheduled maintenance, calibrations, troubleshooting, and repair of instrumentation and control systems within a nuclear power environment.

The role involves hands-on maintenance on microprocessor-based equipment, adherence to radiological permits, and completing the required training under the National Academy for Nuclear Training program.

Qualifications

  • Two year post-high school relevant education or equivalent experience.
  • Pass the Instrument and Control Technician Apprentice qualification test and EEI Standardize test.
  • Complete initial, continuous, on-the-job, training leading to first class technician as accredited by the National Academy for Nuclear Training.
  • Knowledge of electronic equipment and circuitry.
  • Familiarity with basic theories of mechanical instrumentation and control and their application in nuclear power stations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and control circuits.
  • Ability to interpret sketches, prints, and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, policies, and practices.
  • Able to pass and maintain discipline eye examination standards.
  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical measurements.
  • Familiarity with digital electronics and microprocessor-based technology.
  • Physically able to use protective clothing and respirators for nuclear power maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled maintenance, calibrations, troubleshooting and repair of instrumentation and controls.
  • Maintain calibration and operation of microprocessor, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic I&C systems.
  • Verify compliance with Equipment Clearances and Radiological Work Permits.
  • Diagnose and correct operating perturbations to maintain control systems.
  • Complete training commitments identified in the I&C Technician Apprentice program.
  • Maintain calibration of radiation monitoring equipment and portable test gear.
  • Keep I&C shops and work areas safe, orderly, and clean.
  • Assist other groups to support safe plant operations.
  • Accurately document all tasks performed.
  • Comply with regulatory site procedures and policies, including Site Emergency Plan and Technical Specifications.
  • Assist in maintaining reactor containment systems during all plant modes.
  • Perform pre-critical checkout of reactor controls and instrumentation.
  • Set up test equipment and assist engineers in tests of station equipment.
  • Calibrate and maintain radiological monitoring systems and equipment.
  • Assist with rigging for I&C equipment installations.
  • Assist in board component repair and wiring tasks as directed by computer personnel.
  • Maintain reactor control rod drive and related equipment.
  • Assist modifications to control panels for new installations.
  • Perform multitask and related duties as assigned.

Job Description
DUTIES:
  • 1. Perform scheduled maintenance, calibrations, troubleshooting and repair and assist in the major maintenance and calibration of instrumentation and controls, reactor protection and associated equipment.
  • 2. As directed, performs maintenance on microprocessor, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic instrumentation and control systems.
  • 3. Verifies and complies with Equipment Clearances and Radiological Work Permits associated with Instrument and Control maintenance work assignments.
  • 4. As directed, maintains proper operation of control systems by diagnosis and correction of operating perturbations through maintenance and calibration.
  • 5. Satisfactorily completes the scheduled initial, continuous, on-the-job and refresher training commitments identified in the I&C Technician Apprentice-Shift Training Program as accredited by the National Academy for Nuclear Training and multitask training.
  • 6. Maintains calibration and maintenance work areas for portable equipment associated with radiation monitoring.
  • 7. Maintains the I&C shops, job work sites, test equipment issue areas and lab equipment in a safe, orderly, and neat condition.
  • 8. Assists other groups in support of safe operations and maintenance of the nuclear site.
  • 9. Accurately completes all documentation associated with and required by assigned job tasks.
  • 10. Complies with all regulatory and site procedures and policies, including Site Emergency Plan and Technical Specifications.
  • 11. Assists in performing maintenance, calibrations, and troubleshooting on systems and equipment within the reactor containment and other radiological areas during all modes of plant operation.
  • 12. As directed, performs "pre-critical checkout" of reactor controls and instrumentation.
  • 13. As directed, sets up test equipment and assists the engineers in conducting tests of station equipment.
  • 14. Assists in performing maintenance and calibration of areas, process and portable radiation monitoring systems and equipment.
  • 15. Assists in performing the necessary rigging in handling of I&C related equipment and materials.
  • 16. As directed, assists computer personnel by performing board component level repair, I/O module hardware calibration, soldering, wire wrapping and cable lug terminations.
  • 17. As directed, performs maintenance on reactor control rod drive and control equipment.
  • 18. Assists in modifying control panels, both electrically and mechanically, for new or different installation of instruments and controls.
  • 19. Performs multitask and other work related to the above assigned or directed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 1. Two year Post-High School relevant education or equivalent experience as deemed appropriate by Maintenance Management, in applicable field.
  • 2. Pass the Instrument and Control Technician Apprentice qualification test and EEI Standardize test.
  • 3. Satisfactorily completes, as scheduled, the initial, continuous, on-the-job, Training and qualifications and to proceed in line of progression to first class technician as identified in the I&C Training Program as accredited by the National Academy for Nuclear Training.
  • 4. Demonstrated work knowledge of electronic equipment and circuitry, and some knowledge of magnetic amplifier equipment.
  • 5. Demonstrated reasonable familiarity with the basic theories of mechanical instrumentation and control and their methods of application in nuclear power stations; and familiarity with physical/dimensional measurement techniques and methodologies.
  • 6. Demonstrated ability to "troubleshoot" instrumentation and control circuits.
  • 7. Demonstrated ability to interpret simple sketches, prints, and written instructions and to work from such recorded instructions.
  • 8. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply, company safety regulations, policies, and practices.
  • 9. Must be capable of passing and maintaining the applicable discipline eye examination standards.
  • 10. Demonstrated reasonable familiarity of electrical and mechanical physical/dimensional measurements.
  • 11. Demonstrated reasonable familiarity of digital electronics and microprocessor based technology.
  • 12. Must be physically able and willing to utilize protective clothing, respirators, or other equipment essential to the requirements of maintaining a Nuclear Power
