Job Description

Naval Nuclear Laboratory offers internship opportunities for college students to spend the summer of 2027 gaining valuable work experience in world‑leading Navy operations. The NNL Summer Technical Internships provide an immersive professional experience in your field of study. Interns work directly with world‑class engineers, scientists, researchers, and technicians, gaining real‑world experience and mentorship. Tasks include researching and developing new technologies and concepts; designing and testing software, components or integrated systems; developing models and performing data analysis; supporting operations and developing process controls and procedures. Interns contribute to deliverables that have a direct impact on the Navy’s nuclear fleet.

The NNL Internship is a 10‑12 week program starting in May/June 2027. An internship position may result in a return internship or full‑time employment offer upon successful completion of the program.

Required Knowledge and Skill
  • Pursuing Nuclear Engineering or related BS, MS, or PhD degrees from an accredited college or university
  • Must have completed at least the first full year of college by May 2027
  • Enrolled/continuing in a degree program throughout this internship

Preferred Skills
  • Cumulative minimum GPA 3.0/4.0
  • Prior related internship, co‑op or work experience (paid or volunteer)
  • Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) or Naval Nuclear Program experience
Compensation and Benefits
  • Competitive salary
  • Defined Contribution Retirement Plans:

    • Capital Accumulation Plan (CAP) with company contribution
  • Flexible work schedules and a 9/80 work schedule option (every other Friday off). Hybrid work schedule may be available
  • Stipend for qualified applicants (school and home address must be >50 miles from assigned work location)
Pay Range

$25.00/hour – $42.50/hour. Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Hourly salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

All candidates must be U.S. citizens, be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified material. Candidates must also pass a drug test in compliance with FMP policy and 10 CFR 707. Marijuana is a federal Schedule‑I controlled substance and is illegal under federal law.
