Qualifications

• Completed at least one year of a Bachelor's program and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in environmental planning, environmental science/studies, GIS, data analytics, geosciences, urban and regional planning, computer science, engineering, or related field.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential duties.

Job description

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is the regional planning and intergovernmental coordination agency that focuses on issues critical to the region's success, including growth and development, transportation, water resources, services for older adults and workforce solutions. ARC is dedicated to unifying the region's collective resources to prepare the metropolitan area for a prosperous future. This is done through professional planning initiatives, the provision of objective information and the involvement of the community in collaborative partnerships. ARC functions as the Atlanta region's federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).

The Atlanta Regional Commission's Natural Resources Department (NRD) has an intern position available to support the work of the Metro Atlanta Climate Action Plan (MACAP). The intern will provide general assistance for MACAP research initiatives and work program. Key responsibilities include data collection, processing, analysis, and visualization, as well as the development metrics and dashboard. Additional responsibilities include researching policies and initiatives related to the MACAP and assisting with public outreach. This role requires the creation of maps and other visual outputs to communicate findings, and strong attention to detail and effective communication of technical information are essential.

This part-time temporary intern position is not eligible for benefits and is anticipated to work a minimum of 10 hours per week with a maximum of 29 hours per week.

• Provide in-depth research and analysis related to climate pollution across the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical area.
• Collect, verify, clean, and analyze a variety of datasets, including from public and private sources.
• Compile data from various sources when existing datasets are not readily available.
• Process and interpret data to generate meaningful and replicable metrics, maps, and graphics and update existing metrics.
• Research, organize, analyze, and summarize policies.
• Write reports, summaries, and other narratives.
• Attend occasional outreach events and share information with the public.

Completed at least one-year of a Bachelors program and currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in environmental planning, environmental science/studies, GIS, data analytics, geosciences, urban and regional planning, computer science, engineering, or related field.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of climate pollution sources, climate mitigation, and climate impacts.
• Experience with R, Pandas, GitHub or other languages and tools for coding, data processing, and analysis.
• Completed at least one year of an Undergraduate degree in Environmental Planning, Environmental Science/Studies, GIS, Data Analytics, Geosciences, Urban and Regional Planning, Engineering, or other Science and technology concentrations or similar level of college level education required;
• Possess strong oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills;
• Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure data accuracy and integrity;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office proficiency (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, OneNote);
• Possess strong skills in establishing priorities and organizing work;
• Ability to work independently with general instructions;
• Proficiency in ArcGIS, Python, and related tools;
• Knowledge of climate mitigation and impacts is preferred.
