This position operates within the durable tooling value stream and serves as a conduit between Manufacturing Engineering, internal stakeholders, Operational Excellence, OEM design services, tooling suppliers, and tooling OEMs. The NPI Durable Tooling Designer translates manufacturing requirements into practical, producible tooling solutions and supports tooling from initial concept and design through manufacturing, alteration, repair, and release. In this role, you will apply mechanical design, CAD, GD&T, machining, blueprint interpretation, manufacturing engineering, and project management skills to support new product introduction and production readiness. We're looking for a self-directed team player who works with minimal oversight while collaborating across engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze tooling packages from Manufacturing Engineering to understand scope-of-work requirements and develop durable tooling solutions that meet NPI and production requirements.
  • Conduct concept, preliminary layout, and design approval reviews to support NPI programs and ensure tooling designs meet functional, manufacturing, quality, and producibility requirements.
  • Calculate cost estimates for tool design and manufacturing projects and support tooling sourcing and project planning.
  • Complete export reviews for jurisdiction and classification of tool drawings, CAD files, and tooling commodities.
  • Approve and release durable tooling reference packages for design, manufacturing, alteration, and/or repair.
  • Participate and adhere to cross-training practices to broaden your expertise and overall business process capacity across the Module Centers & Operations (MC&O) organization.
  • Disposition supplier non-conformances for accept, reject, or repair and lead supplier to complete RRCA for all escapes.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, process improvement, and operational excellence projects as required.
  • Execute Manufacturing Engineering Specifications and Manufacturing Engineering Instructions.
  • Must be able to review drawings and concepts and resolve producibility concerns, including issues related to machining, dimensions, tolerances, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Candidate must possess a positive attitude and be able to communicate well with staff and management.

Expected travel: 5-10% to assigned MC&O locations, local travel to suppliers encouraged.

Qualifications - You Must Have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and 5+ years relevant experience, OR an advanced degree and 3+ years’ experience, OR 8+ years relevant experience in lieu of a degree
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, machining principles, and blueprint interpretation
  • Proficiency in NX or similar CAD software
  • Demonstrated experience with durable tooling design and dimensioning, including experience designing or developing machining fixtures, production fixtures, gauges, inspection tooling, lifting devices, material handling equipment, assembly tooling, or other manufacturing support equipment
  • Working knowledge of process planning, machine operations, and material characteristics, with experience supporting machining, fabrication, assembly, inspection, or other manufacturing processes
  • Strong decision-making, communication, and project management skills, with experience coordinating engineering and tooling projects across Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, suppliers, or cross-functional teams
Qualifications We Prefer:
  • Experience in Teamcenter and SAP
  • Knowledge of Global Trade Compliance requirements
  • Familiarity with model-based definition (MBD)
