Job summary

Brevard Zoo, located on the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida, is seeking a Controller to lead the accounting function and ensure GAAP compliance for a nonprofit organization with a growing footprint including the Bowen Aquarium project.

The role reports to the Chief Financial Officer, supervises accounting staff, and drives month-end close, financial reporting, and audit readiness while supporting grant and capital project accounting in a mission-driven environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum five (5) to seven (7) years of progressive accounting experience, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Advanced knowledge of accrual-basis GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting standards (FASB ASC 958).
  • Experience with full-cycle month-end and year-end close, financial statements, and reconciliations.
  • Experience with external audits and IRS Form 990 filings.
  • Previous supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting functions (AP/AR/GL).
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes with timely postings.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly financial reporting packages and variance analyses.
  • Maintain chart of accounts and proper asset/revenue classifications per GAAP and ASC 958.
  • Coordinate grant and capital project accounting; manage grant drawdowns and reporting.
  • Oversee payroll accounting and benefits coordination with HR.
