Job summary

University Hospitals is seeking a Non-Registered Polysomnography Technologist to perform in-lab sleep testing, HSAT, patient care and education under supervision to support diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Travel to various sleep lab locations may be required.

You will perform PSG, titration studies, MSLT/MWT, PAP Nap and HSAT, and score sleep studies for adults and children, ensuring artifact-free recordings and adherence to UH Sleep Center protocols.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required; Associate's degree preferred.
  • 1+ year healthcare/direct patient care experience preferred.
  • Registry by BRPT (RPSGT) within 1 year or equivalent such as RRT-SDS within 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Perform PSG, titration studies, MSLT, MWT, PAP Nap, HSAT and related sleep procedures.
  • Provide education and age-appropriate care to patients from 0 through 18 years, adults, and geriatric populations.
  • Calibrate equipment, identify and correct malfunctions, ensure artifact-free recordings.
  • Perform scoring of adult and pediatric sleep studies.
  • Collaborate with Sleep Center staff to meet departmental goals.
  • Adhere to professional standards and participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Use PPE and disinfect equipment per hospital and department policy.

A Brief Overview

Non-Registered Polysomnography Technologist performs in-lab sleep testing, Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT), patient care and education and works under the general supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist, the Supervisor and Medical Directors to provide comprehensive testing for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. The Technologist may need to travel to various sleep lab locations based on department needs to cover patient care and other duties as assigned.


What You Will Do


  • Perform testing procedures: PSG, titration studies, MSLT, MWT, PAP Nap, HSAT and other sleep procedures; and provide effective care according to UH Sleep Center protocols.

  • Provide education and age appropriate care to patients and families through the entire age spectrum, including 0 through 18 years, adults, and geriatric populations.

  • Performs calibration procudure, identifies and corrects equipment malfunctions, performs :lights out and lights on procedures to ensure an artifact-free recording.

  • Perform appropriate scoring of both adult and pediatric sleep studies.

  • Collaborates with Sleep Center staff, and members of other disciplines to ensure a strong team and contribute to the achievement of the operational goals of the assigned area.

  • Takes responsibility for adherence to professional standards, self-development, and participation in quality improvement activities.

  • Uses PPE and cleans and disinfects equipment per hospital and department policy.


Additional Responsibilities


  • Attends department meetings and in-services

  • Completes monthly inter-scorer reliability tests

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Complies with all policies and standards.

  • For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.


Education


  • High School Equivalent / GED (Required)

  • Associate's Degree 2-4 year degree program (Preferred)


Work Experience


  • 1+ years healthcare/ direct patient care. (Preferred)


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


  • Knowledge of scope of practice and thorough understanding of the basics of patient monitoring and care delivery. (Required proficiency)

  • Good interpersonal skills. (Required proficiency)

  • Uses a wide variety of technical equipment to meet patient needs and prescribed medical therapies; has a command of the sleep-induced changes in the physiology of various body systems; has a working knowledge of the physiological and behavioural aberrations associated with sleep/arousal pathology and be capable of rapid interpretation of various tracings as to be able to intervene during a study. (Required proficiency)


Licenses and Certifications


  • Employee must obtain registry by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGT) (Required within 1 Year) or

  • equivalent such as RRT-SDS (Required within 1 Year)
