Role Overview: The Non-Registered Pharmacist at Hy‑Vee provides prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service; verifies prescriptions; counsels patients; and assists with pharmacy inventory, including controlled substances, on an annual basis or as recommended.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people.
  • Smail and greet customers in a friendly manner, whether inside the pharmacy or elsewhere in the store.
  • Make an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assist customers by escorting them to the products they’re looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests, performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to callers.
  • Assist with controlled substance inventory on an annual basis or as recommended.
  • Assist with inventory control, maintaining inventory levels by ordering and stocking merchandise, checking invoices, and entering inventory information into the computer.
  • Assist with coaching, counseling, and training employees; participate in additional education and training.
  • Assist HBC manager with ordering and merchandising OTCs.
  • Assist with reconciliation and balancing of 3rd party accounts.
  • Visit schools, doctors’ offices, senior centers, etc., to market services.
  • Assist with monthly inventory.
  • Build growth and sales through counseling and wellness programs.
  • Follow security and regulatory procedures, including Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Assume responsibility for the department in the absence of the pharmacy manager.
  • Ensure customers receive prompt and courteous service.
  • Maintain a professional appearance (clean lab coat and name tag).
  • Communicate continually with pharmacy manager about procedural changes, issues, or corporate communications.
  • Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines.
  • Report to work when scheduled and on time.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Partner with other departments or staff (e.g., dietitian) to promote wellness and the pharmacy.
  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed.
  • Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required.

  • Logical or scientific thinking to solve problems; abstract and concrete variable understanding.
  • Arithmetic calculations, including algebraic and geometric operations.
  • Compose original correspondence; follow technical manuals; interact with people; interview/counsel; evaluate technical data.
Education and Experience

College degree and working toward a licensure in pharmacy. Must have continuing education to maintain license. Medication Therapy Management (MTM) preferred. Ability to administer immunizations.

Physical Requirements
  • Exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently.
  • Visual requirements: vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet, depth perception, color vision, field of vision.
  • Perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions

This position frequently involves a fast work pace in a retail store setting. Must handle multiple tasks (filling scripts, answering telephone, waiting on customers, etc.) daily. Occasional exposure to dangerous chemicals/solvents while compounding products and chemotherapy drugs.

Confidentiality

Maintain confidentiality of customer’s private medical information according to HIPAA. Maintain confidentiality of prescription drug pricing and costs.

Financial Responsibility

Fully responsible for company assets including prescription inventory, third‑party accounts receivable, pharmacy computer and software, and pharmacy fixtures. Holds authority, within reasonable limits, to purchase inventory for the pharmacy.

  • Daily contact with customers, general public, suppliers/vendors, and pharmacy operations support staff.
  • Occasional contact with community or trade/professional organizations and federal/state governmental or regulatory agencies.
Hazardous Drug Handling

I understand that this pharmacy handles and prepares hazardous drugs. The USP 800 requires personnel of reproductive capability to understand the risks of handling hazardous drugs. Exposure may cause acute and chronic effects. Failure to follow pharmacy policies and procedures may increase risk of exposure.
