Job Summary

The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) supports faculty research programs by providing comprehensive services related to the care and use of laboratory animals. This includes animal procurement/receiving, daily care, and ongoing health monitoring of all species.

The Animal Technician is responsible for daily animal care in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and institutional regulations. Core responsibilities include cage and rack changing, feeding and watering animals per established protocols, and maintaining animal housing and equipment according to standard operating procedures.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining accurate records such as per diem logs, animal health surveillance reports, feed logs, environmental monitoring (temperature/humidity), and animal inventory records. The role may also involve performing technical procedures in support of research activities.

Under the direction of the Animal Resources Supervisor or assigned lead, the Animal Technician is expected to independently perform all duties aligned with the Assistant Animal Technician role while contributing to LARC's operational and research support mission. This includes identifying, addressing, and promptly reporting any issues related to animal health, facility operations, or compliance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in animal handling or operation of lab animal sanitation equipment.
  • Ability to observe and communicate animal health concerns to veterinary and research staff.
  • Experience maintaining accurate and compliant records.
  • General knowledge of feeding, housing, and care requirements for multiple laboratory animal species.
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance requirements (federal and accrediting agencies).
  • Knowledge of sanitation, disinfectants, cage washers, and autoclave operations.
  • Basic computer proficiency (email, barcode scanning, electronic reporting systems, timesheets).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to SOPs and workplace rules.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, and reach for up to 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull heavy equipment。
  • Must be able to wear required PPE (protective clothing, gloves, safety glasses, masks, respirators as needed).
  • Compliance with facility rules (e.g., no eating/drinking in animal areas, no smoking on campus).
Education, Training, and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One of the following:
    • Completion of training equivalent to Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification (AALAS) and 1 year of animal care experience
    • OR 2 years of relevant animal care experience
    • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
