Job summary

Irving ISD seeks a responsible non-CDL bus driver to support the transportation of students with disabilities. Job description

Primary Purpose

Provides support to the bus drivers. Rides the special education buses for Irving Independent School District and ensures safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities. Responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes of the Irving Independent School District. Operates a mini-activity bus, suburban, or designated district non-CDL vehicle for transporting students to and from school or designated locations.

Note

Non-CDL drivers for the next school year. (CDL Class A and B also will be accepted). We will train but please make them aware that we require them to stay with Irving ISD for two years if we pay for CDL. Prefer if they have experience driving a box truck, bus lines, etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to work well with students with special needs
  • Ability to carry heavy loads quickly and safely
  • Must have completed a 20-hour TEA Safety Course
  • Valid Texas Drivers License
  • Class B CDL or able to obtain within 90 days of hire (start) date
  • Ability to pass the annual DOT physical examination and random drug test
  • Texas School bus driver certification or ability to obtain one
  • Satisfactory driving record
Minimum Experience

One (1) year of experience in a related field preferred.

Major Responsibilities And Job Duties
  • Safely and efficiently deliver students to and from schools by following assigned bus routes, adhering to established schedules, and obeying all traffic laws.
  • Maintain safety precautions when students board and depart buses using hand-operated door mechanisms.
  • Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrators.
  • Maintain a current record of assigned routes and stops, including required seating charts for elementary and junior high students.
  • Perform prompt, quick vehicle evacuations of students in emergencies.
  • Keep the vehicles interior clean and always maintain an appropriate fuel level in the vehicle.
  • Inspect vehicles driven for students after each route and before returning to the Transportation facility.
  • Check vehicles driven for mechanical defects before and after each operation and immediately report any abnormality or malfunction.
  • Report involvement in an accident (regardless of severity), vehicle damage, and student injuries immediately; complete required reports.
  • Administer basic first aid when necessary.
  • Complete specialized training opportunities made available through the Transportation Department: CPR, first-aid, behind-the-wheel training, discipline management procedures, etc.
  • Maintain positive rapport with students, administrators, teachers, staff, and parents.
  • Understand and observe state laws about vehicle safety.
  • Attend required staff development and monthly safety meetings as the Administration and Director require.
  • Assume responsibility for personal daily timecards.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Follow all rules, regulations, and policies of the Irving Independent School District.
  • Perform other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and Director.

Working Conditions

Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Operates activity bus, suburban, and designated non-CDL district vehicles, as well as all specialized equipment identified to accommodate students.
Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive movement of the steering wheel with frequent use of hands and wrists.
Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds; team lifting is not likely to exceed 150 lbs.
Environment: Exposure to inclement weather, including heat, cold, rain, and snow; ability to walk 35 yards within 25 seconds; working positions include kneeling and climbing, with extended reaching in front of and above the body. Climb steps in and out of bus up to 16 times per route from a 20 elevation (3 daily routes); ability to safely exit the rear of the bus from 4 elevation.
Mental Demands: Effective communication skills (both verbal and written); maintain effective control over groups of students; respond appropriately in emergencies; maintain emotional control under stressful conditions.
Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to the supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
