Job description

The University of Vermont Health's Department of Radiation Oncology is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible radiation oncologist for a one-year, non-ACGME fellowship beginning July 2027. The fellowship offers a structured transition from residency to independent practice through a balanced clinical and research experience, with approximately 50% protected time for scholarly activity and opportunity for focused training in stereotactic radiosurgery brachytherapy, and adaptive radiotherapy.

The fellow will be appointed as an Instructor at the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, with professional fee billing through the UVM Health Medical Group. The position is well suited for radiation oncologists interested in academic practice, subspecialty development, and delivering high-quality care to patients across an integrated rural and community networks.

Program Structure
  • 0.5 clinical FTE distributed across UVM Health Network sites
  • 0.5 protected FTE for research, scholarly activity, and graduate coursework
  • Instructor appointment at the Larner College of Medicine
  • Integration with the UVM Cancer Center, including weekly peer review, multidisciplinary tumor boards, and disease-site specialist mentorship
Clinical Experience

The fellow will participate in all aspects of radiation oncology care — patient evaluation, treatment planning, on-treatment management, and follow-up — across UVM Medical Center (Burlington, VT) and affiliated network sites, including Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (Plattsburgh, NY), Central Vermont Medical Center (Berlin, VT), and Alice Hyde Medical Center (Malone, NY).

Clinical focus areas can be tailored to fellow interests and departmental needs, including:

  • Quality and patient safety
  • Brachytherapy
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
  • Adaptive radiotherapy via Varian Ethos (implementation underway in FY26)

Working alongside attending physicians, dosimetrists, physicists, and multidisciplinary teams, the fellow will gain hands-on experience with a broad range of technologies and treatment techniques. The network’s reach into rural and community settings provides meaningful exposure to access-driven care delivery.

Research and Scholarly Development

Through partnership with the UVM Cancer Center, the fellow will receive substantial support for scholarly activity:

  • Clinician Investigator Development Initiative (CIDI) award providing 25% protected effort at the NIH salary cap, plus funds for clinical research activities and trial development
  • Funding for graduate-level coursework through the UVM Larner College of Medicine Public Health Program; fellows complete two courses during the fellowship year, with continued funding available for two additional years if the individual transitions to faculty (six courses total = Public Health certificate, equivalent to half of an MPH)
  • Opportunities to develop and lead investigator-initiated trials, contributing to the Cancer Center’s work toward NCI designation
