Calvert County Public Schools in Prince Frederick, MD, seeks an NMS Athletic/Activities Director to lead the school’s athletic program. The role coordinates events, manages contracts, transportation, and facilities while ensuring safety and compliance with state and county rules.

The director reports to the School Principal, guides coaches and sponsors, and helps develop the athletic budget and policy. Strong leadership and communication are essential for success in this extra‑duty position.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Hold, or be eligible for, a Maryland State Teaching Certificate.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of successful teaching working experience at the middle school level.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years of coaching experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate management, leadership and human relations skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Attend all meetings involving his/her school in the area of athletics or appoint a representative to act in his/her absence.
  • Attend all home games, contests, and meets, in which his/her school is involved, or appoint a representative to act in his/her absence.
  • File and have access to all contracts, correspondence pertaining to athletics, proof of age documentation and physical forms of each candidate.
  • Arrange and confirm officials for athletic contests.
  • Bi‑weekly, inspect the building, grounds, stands, athletic field, etc., to ensure that safety standards have been met.
  • Schedule all practice areas giving particular attention to activities occurring at the same time.
  • Assist the sponsors of the band, cheerleaders, and other faculty members in preparation for pre‑game and half‑time entertainment.
  • In cooperation with the Principal, assume the role of leader in the development of the school athletic program.
  • Be responsible for developing and implementing rules and regulations governing, receiving and visiting teams.
  • Arrange for all athletic transportation.
  • Supervise the arrangements for cleaning, repairing, and maintaining of uniforms.
  • Interpret the County and State Athletic Association rules and regulations.
  • Establish standardization and enforcement of minimal training rules in cooperation with the coaching staff and administration which includes Concussion Awareness.
  • Be responsible for initiating procedures for care and use of locker rooms and all physical facilities.
  • Be responsible for verifying academic eligibility of student participants.
  • Be responsible for the coordination and development of the school’s athletic budget.

POSITION: NMS Athletic/Activities Director (Job # 3778)

LOCATION: Northern Middle School

JOB SUMMARY: The Athletic Director is the executive officer for the Principal and the school’s resource person in the area of athletics. The Athletic Director attempts to foster an athletic program based on sound educational objectives. The Athletic Director shall enforce and adhere to the policies, and rules and regulations of the state, county Board of Education/school. The Principal must be informed at all times on all athletic issues affecting the school.

REPORTS TO: School Principal

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
  • Hold, or be eligible for, a Maryland State Teaching Certificate.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of successful teaching working experience at the middle school level.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years of coaching experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate management, leadership and human relations skills.

Essential Job Functions

  • Be responsible for initiating procedures for care and use of locker rooms and all physical facilities.
  • Be responsible for verifying academic eligibility of student participants.
  • Be responsible for the coordination and development of the school’s athletic budget.

Other Duties: Performs related work as required or assigned by the Principal. May only coach a team under emergency situations with the approval of the school principal.

Physical Demands: Position requires significant periods of standing, walking and lifting and is performed in a typical school environment.

Unusual Demands: None.

Terms of Employment: Extra‑Duty, Extra‑Pay (EDEP) Athletic Director Position.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.

FLSA Status: Exempt.

Effective Date of Position: School Year 2026-2027, Club Sponsor, 8/25/2026-6/30/2027.
