Job summary

BetterHelp is hiring a Machine Learning Engineer to build and scale AI‑powered experiences, with a focus on NLP, LLMs, evaluation systems, and safety infrastructure. You will work on language models, model evaluation, and production inference optimizations.

The role requires strong ML/NLP fundamentals, experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow, and a track record of deploying language models in real‑world applications. Remote work with PST alignment is available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS/AI/ML or related field; Master’s/PhD preferred.
• 3+ years of industry experience building ML systems.
• Strong Python programming skills.
• Experience working with NLP and Large Language Models.
• Experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Strong understanding of deep learning, transformers, embeddings, and NLP architectures.
• Experience evaluating ML models and designing quality measurement frameworks.
• Experience fine-tuning language models for production use cases.

Responsibilities

• Develop and improve NLP systems and language model‑powered experiences.
• Fine‑tune and optimize open‑source and proprietary language models for domain‑specific use cases.
• Evaluate model performance and identify opportunities for quality improvements.
• Design and implement evaluation frameworks to measure model quality, reliability, and business impact.
• Build automated testing pipelines to identify regressions and failures.
• Develop metrics and monitoring systems to continuously assess model performance in production.
• Design and implement guardrails to improve model reliability and safety.
• Build systems to detect unsafe outputs, prompt injection attempts, and fraud patterns.
• Partner with Product and Engineering teams to ensure AI systems behave predictably.
