Job summary

Nike Inc. in Beaverton, OR is seeking a Cushioning Engineering Intern to join the Nike Innovation Underfoot Systems team. You will help invent and evaluate future cushioning concepts, working with engineers and scientists on hands-on development.

Ideal candidates are pursuing a master’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering, with project management experience, DOE skills, data analytics, and strong communication. This 10-week paid internship includes relocation support.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a related field with a graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028.
  • Proven project management skills including experience with project tracking tools
  • Experience creating and executing Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Comfortable running complex machinery with high regard for safety
  • Familiarity with systems thinking approach and application
  • Strong data analytics: capture, analysis, and presentation skills
  • Excellent multi-tasking and organization skills
  • Systematic and creative problem-solving skills
  • Plastics molding, injection tooling, mold design experience preferred
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use manual tools
  • Experience creating and/or interpreting 3D models with design engineering software such as Rhino, Siemens NX
  • Strong communication skills with ability to communicate across a variety of audiences

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of new performance-based cushioning systems.
  • Participate in DOE experiments and data analysis to characterize materials and designs.
  • Assist in communicating complex technical topics to diverse audiences within Nike.
  • Contribute to hands-on prototyping and validation activities.

WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH

Nike Innovation Underfoot Systems are a team focused on inventing future cushioning technologies and systems. The team consists of a collection of engineers, scientists, and innovators with a passion to create new technologies that benefit all of the world's athletes*. The team works from end to end, understanding athlete needs, delivering new concepts through ideation, method of make development and validation to advance cushioning systems for all athletes.

WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON

As a Cushioning Engineering Intern, you'll work with the Cushioning Innovation team to invent, innovate, evaluate and characterize future cushioning systems to help us better understand their function and performance. To do this successfully you will have a strong engineering problem solving mindset, a bias for getting your hands dirty, a self-starter mentality, and a positive energy that you show up with every day. You will be curious at your core, willing to challenge assumptions and imagine new possibilities. You will also exhibit an ability to clearly communicate complex technical topics to diverse audiences and at all levels within the organization.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for a curious and creative intern with a passion for learning and pushing the limits of what’s possible. As a Cushioning Engineer Intern, you will support the development of new performance based cushioning systems that result in growth opportunities and competitive advantages in the marketplace. This is a hands-on role that supports research and development of product innovations.
