POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Custodian of Buildings and Grounds (Hours 2:30-11:00PM)

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

Maintains an assigned school facility, group of buildings, or office space in a clean, orderly, and secure manner following a predetermined schedule, and performs other related work as assigned. The District expects each staff member will put the safety, health, and well-being of students at the forefront of all actions, job responsibilities, and decisions; and perform all duties in alignment with the District's Strategic Plan.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Screening: Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical screen.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Demonstrates knowledge of basic cleaning methods, procedures, materials, supplies, and equipment used on various surfaces.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of basic safety practices and safe working methods related to custodial work.
    • Ability to correctly and efficiently operate specialized tools, cleaning equipment, and polishing machinery.
  • Abilities:
    • Perform moderate to heavy physical labor and manual activities without close supervision.
    • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and follow a work schedule.
    • Keep basic work records and make written reports.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
    • Ability to handle stressful situations, effectively manage time, and meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous custodial or janitorial experience.
  • One to two years of successful full-time employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Facility Cleanliness & Sanitation

  • Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  • Maintains areas adjacent to buildings in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition.
  • Sweeps, mops, wet-washes, scrubs, waxes, and vacuums floors, rugs, and carpets as assigned.
  • Cleans, thoroughly sanitizes, and disinfects restrooms and locker rooms; replenishes supplies and fills dispensers.
  • Dusts, waxes, washes, and polishes furniture, woodwork, ledges, lockers, and door/window frames.
  • Cleans tables, desks, windows, glass, walls, sinks, fountains, partitions, and equipment (including pencil sharpeners, etc.).
  • Empties, cleans, and sanitizes wastebaskets, trash, and garbage receptacles.
  • Cleans whiteboards, chalkboards, and trays, giving special regard to notes left by teachers.

Maintenance, Operations & Grounds

  • Performs routine facility, grounds, and equipment maintenance functions with the use of household hand tools, including minor repair, parts replacement, and adjustment tasks.
  • Does necessary touch-up painting, minor repairs to plumbing, electrical, carpentry, general mechanical areas, snow removal, grass cutting, etc. (Note: This shall not be construed to cover major installations, new construction, or violate jurisdictional areas of other crafts).
  • Performs routine maintenance and preventative maintenance functions, including equipment adjustments, lubrication, and simple parts replacement.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of heating, plumbing, lighting, and ventilation equipment.
  • Checks, repairs, or replaces lights, fixtures, bulbs, and paper products daily.
  • May water lawn, trees, and shrubs in the absence of grounds personnel.
  • Orders, receives, stores, and distributes supplies.

Event Support & Special Functions

  • Stacks, assembles, arranges, and stores furniture, equipment, and supplies for special activities and events.
  • Performs skilled custodial functions in the setup, arrangement, and operation of special purpose equipment, such as stage lighting panels, curtain operation, set arrangements, and other similar functions.

Security, Safety & Emergency Response

  • Ensures building security daily by locking doors, checking windows, and securing cabinets at the end of the school day/shift.
  • Sets and/or checks fire alarms and alarm/security systems.
  • Follows a daily custodial work schedule as prepared by the administrator and Supervisor of Maintenance.
  • Observes and reports needs for major repairs to supervisors.
  • Reports to supervisors in writing any acts of vandalism, deliberate littering, unruly student activities, loitering, or behavior that may be demeaning.
  • Conducts emergency cleanup resulting from vandalism, breakage, spillage, or illness.

Professionalism & Team Collaboration

  • Displays a positive attitude towards work, students, staff, and associates.
  • Displays dependability, responsibility, reliability, and an willingness to accept changes and assignments positively.
  • Maintains a neat, proper appearance, dress, and strict punctuality for all time schedules and work assignments.
  • Operates as an integral, performance-oriented part of the custodial team.

EQUIPMENT USED: Cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment, including but not limited to vacuum, floor polishers, floor strippers, miscellaneous scrubbing equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside and outside. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be noisy, depending upon the task at hand.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, travel from one building to another, push heavy equipment, twist at neck and waist, reach, kneel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. May be required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds.

MENTAL/MOTOR DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee often performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). Guidance and reinforcement are usually unavailable. The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee may be involved in interactions which require oral and written communications.

Employed for a prescribed term of twelve (12) months per year. Salary, benefits and other working conditions as negotiated between Whitefish School District and the Whitefish Classified Employees Association.

EVALUATION:

Performance of said duties and responsibilities will be evaluated by the Building Principal/Director of Maintenance in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
