Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine custodial tasks at an assigned site: sweep, mop, scrub, wax floors; vacuum carpets; dust and polish furniture.
  • Clean classrooms, cafeterias, gyms, auditoriums, lounges, offices, and restrooms; manage waste and recycling.
  • Operate custodial equipment and report safety hazards; ensure locks and security per guidelines.
  • Move and arrange furniture for events and classroom setup; assist with special projects.
  • Respond to daily emergencies and assist maintenance requests; document issues for resolution.

The custodian works with a diverse team, ensuring that campus is cleaned and ready for the next school day.

The custodian contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to the community. This position requires the ability to effectively communicate via phone, email, and written messages; to ensure that all duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality and in a timely manner; flexibility, forward thinking and managing deadlines; willingness to seek the latest educational practices and implement; and rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and a wide degree of creativity and latitude are expected. Your job has when few other people are around on campus so the ability to work independently is a must.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility; sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets; dust, wash and polish furniture and woodwork.
  • Clean classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, auditoriums, lounges, offices, locker rooms, hallways and other facilities as assigned; maintain lunch areas and areas around play equipment; maintain and tumble locks and lockers, empty waste receptacles; recycle bottles and other materials; spot mop spills; remove gum, debris and graffiti as needed.
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; wash mirrors, tile, walls, windows, and window coverings; unclog drains and toilets.
  • Pick up paper and other debris from school grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to school facilities; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to school building; perform emergency cleanup services resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling and illness; assist in reporting and preventing vandalism.
  • Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines and other equipment as assigned.
  • Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean white boards, trays and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners; clean tables, chairs and floors.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment; prepare classrooms, gymnasiums and other facilities for special events or meetings as assigned; set up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following special events.
  • Lock and unlock doors, gates and windows as appropriate; turn lights on and off as needed; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines.
  • Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate personnel; report need for maintenance and repairs to appropriate authority.
  • Assist in receiving, assembling, and distributing supplies and equipment.
  • Respond to daily emergencies such as clean-ups, set-ups, loading and unloading supplies.
  • Train and provide guidance to new personnel.
  • Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods
  • Perform any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by your supervisor.

  • General knowledge of care for storing cleaning items
  • Must be able to work independently and on a flexible schedule
  • May be required to work a flexible schedule, to include nights
  • Must be able to perform strenuous tasks and can lift 75 lbs.
  • Ability to lift, move and use ladders, lifts, and other related equipment

The position will require some evening and weekend hours.

EVALUATION

The performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the procedures developed by the Diocese of Phoenix and Notre Dame Preparatory under the direction of the Leadership team.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Twelve-month, full-time, hourly non-exempt employee. The Leadership team under the guidance of the Diocese of Phoenix establishes base salaries and stipends. A schedule of mandatory days and extra responsibilities is provided prior to the start of a new school year.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
  • Preference given to a practicing Catholic, but faithful persons of other faiths are welcome (admin jobs must be practicing Catholic)
  • Must be willing to make a public Profession of Faith if Catholic; if non-Catholic, willing to support Catholic teachings and philosophy
  • High school degree required
  • Experience preferred
  • Current driver's license
  • Receive Safe Environment Training and signed the Code of Conduct. AZ Fingerprint clearance completed. All completed prior to the start date.
