Job summary

MercyOne Health System in Des Moines, Iowa, is seeking a registered nurse to join the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This full-time position covers a 12-hour night shift, with responsibilities delivering high-quality, individualized nursing care to neonates and collaborating with neonatologists and specialists.

The NICU unit features 62 beds in 44 private rooms in the East Tower, and nurses work as part of a dedicated team using state-of-the-art equipment to care for high-risk and full-term

Qualifications

• Current or compact state licensure as a registered nurse (Iowa or compact).
• American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers within 6 weeks of hire.
• Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within 3 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Assesses, plans, and implements nursing care while ensuring patient comfort.
• Coordinates care and delegates tasks in a team-based approach.
• Utilizes IV pumps, monitoring equipment, and drainage devices to maximize patient safety.
• Initiates emergency measures (e.g., CPR) when needed.
• Assists with patient care duties including hygiene and mobility.

This dedicated unit consists of 62 beds in 44 private patient rooms and is located in the East Tower. Credentialed as a Level III NICU, practicing highly technical, state-of-the-art care for high-risk premature babies and full-term newborns in need of specialized care. Nurses work with neonatologists, cardiologists, surgeons and other medical specialties as a team approach to care and provide the best care for infants.

Job Summary / Purpose

Provides individualized, high-quality nursing care to patients of all ages. Uses a team approach to delegate and coordinate patient care at admission, transfer, and discharge. Independently delivers nursing care using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, ethical principles, and professional judgment. Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

Assesses, plans, and implements nursing care while ensuring patient comfort. Practices safe patient handling techniques. Continues to evaluate assigned patients and provides ongoing treatment. Anticipates, identifies, and responds to educational and emotional needs of patients and families. Guides and directs healthcare personnel (i.e. Patient Care Technicians) in caring for patients. Maintains knowledge of equipment setup, maintenance, and use (i.e. IV pumps, monitoring equipment, and drainage devices). Utilizes safeguards such as IV pump drug library and monitor alarms whenever available to maximize patient safety. Initiates emergency support measures (i.e. cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury). Assists with patient care duties/tasks (i.e., emptying drainage devices, ambulating, and hygiene).

Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a current or compact state licensure as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certified within six (6) weeks of hire.
